An honest opinion about upgrading?
Are your speakers on good stands? Also I would experiment with cones under speakes and equipment. Reduce room reflections behind your speakers.
Audio Research Ref 5 preamp
to answer your question. I believe the Ref-5 has a more organic sound to it that the Ref-3, less electronic.

It really doesn't matter to me if they are able to build it for less money. What matters to me is;were they able to make a significant improvement, I think they did. Further refining and improving something great must be quite a task for R&D t...

Actually McIntosh goes up too. However it's all about no compromise quality and for the money ARC is right up at the top.

LOL, I hear ya! I guess will find that out after it comes out. Hey it may already be on the drawing board.
Shindo and Coincident
Be careful of Shindo if you buy used. I get the impression that the dealers and distributors are not too supportive of owners of used Shindo products unless you buy it from a dealer. Also they tell me system Matching is much more critical with Shi...

Having had many preamps in this category over the last 10 years to include VTL 7.5 mk1, cj ACT-2, cj Art mk-2, ARC Ref-3 twice, and Mcintosh c-500. I believe the Ref_5 tops them all by quite a margin. The first thing I noticed with the Ref 5 Is mor...

I admit it, I'm addicted . I get quite a rush out of opening a brand spanking new preamp. The smell of a new circuit board as I pop the seal on the plastic for the first time and slide out a pristine piece of top notch audio gear. Oh yeah! Thats w...
Audio Research Reference 5 Preamp
I heard from a reputable source at ARC that the Ref 5 will have the same tube compliment as the ref 3. Totally new circuit boards with some circuit changes. The board is horizontal instead of vertical. The sound improvement is said to be quite sub...
How does one get off the merry-go-round?
Just like Hotel California, You can check out any time you like but you can never leave.
Solid State Version of Tube McIntosh C220
McIntosh broke the mold when they created the c220 and I don't know if there is a solid state equivalent. If you really like the sound of the c220 you will not find that in their solid states products. If you are worried about the reliability of t...
