Galion TS120 I am sure it is a very nice amplifier and sounds very good. But I will never own an auto bias amp ever again (not meaning fixed cathode bias). Or one with a digital control of bias etc. I would rather not risk a runaway tube if the circuit fails...
Streamers? Whatever you do - don't buy a Musical Fidelity MX streamer. Very well built but buggy slow software. The one I just tried crashed with Roon at higher bit rates. Much better off buying a Lumin U1 Mini used for around $1200 which is rock solid and g...
Galion TS120 I expect Doge10 had supply chain issues for their components or possibly even infringed on some design patent from another company. Who knows but Thomas is in Canada and seems keen on addressing customer concerns so for those of you who wish plea...
Tube amps - what 3 things… I agree with the previous comment on transformers being the most important component. I recently posted about some coupling capacitor upgrades on some chifi integrated tube amps and it made a big different in sound quality. But just recently I g...
Headphone amps No experience with those but I will give a thumbs up for the Cayin HA-6A if you don't mind a tube amp. I would not buy anything these days without a 4.4mm pentacon balanced connection if you plan to keep it a while.
Recommendation for Headphones under $250 Focal Elegia discontinued. I snagged an open box pair from Adorama at $279. They were brand new. Easy to drive. Sound a little harsh at first but break in fairly quickly. They were $1k headphones originally.
Who is using a desktop headphone rig? ifi Gryphon is very nice. But a little above the budget. Have you looked at the Fiio K7 at $199? I have no experience with it but they also make pretty good products. Its on Amazon.
Your suggestions: Headphone + DAC/Amp combo? I have the Naim HE. Very nice sounding and best solid state combo that I have tried that gets some good organic tubey sound. Matrix Audio element units are nice but a little more analytical sounding. I have the Element I2. Pretty good for the siz...
Headphone break in? I think your opinion of ASR is pretty accurate actually.
Does your IFi Zen Steam have Low Gain? It's the glitchy software. I had that issue with USB digital out with non-iFi DACs. I had to go into the setting and manually adjust the output to !00% but it would often change next time around. It seemed to work fine with the matching iFi DAC. ...
Streamers? I have had good luck with Lumin U1 Mini. There is the newer U2 Mini model now also within the price range. I do also have the upper tier Lumin U1 and while I can hear an improvement fro the mini in many systems you would not notice a big differen...
Question About Capacitor Upgrade in Tube Amp @terry9 Thanks for the additional info. I was just making the point that there are physical properties to capacitors that can alter the sonic characteristics - but the cut and paste text was more related to electrolytic yes. Some people believ...
Question About Capacitor Upgrade in Tube Amp Capacitors of different construction types will have different sonic properties due to a number of factors (see below). So as I understand it the properties of a silvergold in oil foil cap will be different than a copper foil in bees wax as they ...
Question About Capacitor Upgrade in Tube Amp @alexberger Yes the Mundorfs seemed to be a best bang for the buck. I found an online dealer selling them around $30-$40 each depending on the value for SGO Supremes. And while the Willsenton at around $900 plus shipping might seem to be a chea...
Valve Amp for Sonus Faber Sonetto IIIs I do not believe there is much advantage in using tubes with lower efficiency speakers. Tubes really shine in single ended triode configuration (300B tubes for example) into a high efficiency horn speaker at preferably 8ohms not 4ohms. In my case... |
