I was going to write a long reply, but see that Martykl has already written more or less what I would have said. So I'll tick an agreement with him, and summarize in different words: Multiple subs placed using a moderate amount \of trial and error... 
Mother of All Ground Loops
Plug them both into the SAME outlet and see if the same happens. This sounds like a miswired outlet problem.If that fixes it, CHECK ALL THE OUTLETS (get an electrician if you don't have another way) don't guess about which outlet is wired correctly. 
Does Eico ST-40 sound better than Eico HF81?
I used to have one about 40 years ago. Wonderful amp. Its the only tube amp I wish I had back again. 
OPamps still inferior to discrete circuits?
There are advantages of both. Discrete circuits can be made for some special characteristics (such as very high voltage or lowest possible noise for some given source impedance), or customized with features that just don't have enough of a market ... 
how to get rid of hum
If the amp puts out a hum when all other components (except speakers) are disconnected, the problem is the amp. Turn the amp off before disconnecting, then turn it back on to check.Breaking off the ground pin on a three-contact plug is not a good ...
