Direct Drive vs. Idler Drive vs. Belt drive With Rega/Linn people is starting to upgrade and it's quite a learning curve what is important in turntables. There is in Europe more common old school example - Thorens TD160 which is better for playing with upgrades.
Direct Drive vs. Idler Drive vs. Belt drive Yes I checked about Magic and this technique is very good if you want to be sure that nobody will waist time trying to repair broken item or if you want to cover some secret from bad competitor eyes.
Direct Drive vs. Idler Drive vs. Belt drive nandric, I have saw guts of Sony XL55Pro and it was possible to repair it.As I can see from your data if all internal cavity of 88D filled with glue nobody will do that.

Cartridge alignment with non slotted headshell? Alignment isn't stupid one Rauliruegas, you are ignoring the fact that these cartridges was very low compliance hence tracking wasn't the superior one. Ikeda IT-407 tonearm geometry Uni-Din is interesting. But although I am not sure that it's worth the effort. In most of the records crescendo occurs in the very end (at least in classical and jazz) so with cartridges like SPU which are not the best trackers I do feel more safe ...
Cartridge alignment with non slotted headshell? No it's geometry classics. In the old days in Egypt it was started as science to measure the land, now we do measure sound with it.

Direct Drive vs. Idler Drive vs. Belt drive In XL88D you have to change whole motor. That means master has to make new coils in the way as Sony did. It's possible to use diamond cantilever from Namiki.IMO total for that will be at least 2000 EUR.

A Soundsmith Re-tip Believer I also do believe that these ruby and sapphire cantilevers can be broken much more easier than boron.
What to upgrade to? If to look everything looks solid.Only one issue - you have only one tonearm. IMO another tonearm with higher eff mass is the way to go. So to upgrade you have to have second turntable or sell this one and get another one with 2 tonearms. |
