Scams on Audiogon (McIntosh Amps)
There are "knockoffs" of McIntosh gear made in China...They look Exactly like genuine Mac gear. On Mac's website they name the dealers that are NOT authorized Mac dealers. Always check there before any Mac purchase.

@tweak1....true....I just take a soft dry cloth and wipe the surface of every cd before I play it. Works perfect. I'll try the New Dark Matter but the difference using the AA is not a subtle one. It's pretty dramatic.

The way it was explained to me and it makes a lot of sense is.....the laser hits the disc and then comes back  to the reader....since discs are mass produced, they are not entirely a smooth surface...they are pitted thus causing the laser going ba...
CD transports; do they really matter
CEC TL5 Belt driven top loader with Denefrips Ares 2 DAC...Wonderful. Turntables isolate motor noise by using a belt drive. CEC gets it!

Take any cd and play 20 seconds of the first track....then squirt a few drops of Armour All and wipe clean...The surface will be "smoother"....now play that same 20 seconds and the improvement is startling. Better readability of the laser dramatic...
McIntosh -- good for show, not for sound, says dealer

He could have made a fortune if he would have stuck with Denafrips.....I'd like to hear Alvin Lee's side of the story....a more than highly respected member of the audio hi-fi community if you have ever dealt with him.

Totally overwhelmed (speakers under $5k)
My room is similar to yours in size....I have 10 pair of speakers and have learned ONE important fact. The smaller that the actual speaker is...the smaller it sounds. Bookshelf s just don't make it in a good sized rooms like ours.....Most of my li...
AKM makes the best DACs
If there was a "best" dac....or a "best" speaker...or a "best" amplifier......what a boring hobby this would be. The word BEST should never be used in Hi-Fi discussions. :>)
Differences the Project RS2 Transport and the (newest) Jay's Audio CD2 Mk 3
The Denafrips AVATAR is no longer available according to Alvin .
