MC cartridges
Sometimes manufacturers will give a trade-in allowance. In the past I’ve gotten a couple hundred off with my dealer on a Sumiko Blackbird and most recently the same on a Lyra Delos (which isn’t carried locally) at Elusive Disc. If you’re moving up...
Auditioning headphones (ethically)?
@northman, The Cable Company has a Headphone Lending Library, you can borrow multiple models. I’m not affiliated with them but have made purchases.https://www.thecableco.com/the-cable-company-headphone-lending-libraryGood luck, enjoy your quest.
Auditioning headphones (ethically)?
My local dealer has an assortment of headphones to demo with different amps. They have a 30 day return policy. I bought the Sennheiser HD800. High comfort factor on me, I can wear ‘em all day and don’t tire of the sound. I kept them. I also wanted...
Record Cleaning Machines
I used a VPI HW16.5 for years, using VPI’s cleaning solution when I did. The records were spotless afterwards but I don’t think it actually improved the sound. It did add a static charge frequently, so I kept a Zerostat close by.Now I use an Audio...

What will you pay for a new LP?
@bdp24Music Millenium is a jewel of a record store with record bins almost over-flowing and the walls covered with LP’s. It’s nearly sensory overload, but in a good way. Quirky Portland is lucky to have it and even luckier it’s endured. There can b...
Alternate screw down clamp for VPI Aries
I’d go with VPI’s record weight. It’s unthreaded but weighted. You can leave the platter spinning when changing records. I had a screw on clamp with my HW19mkIII, the weighted clamp came with the Classic. Simpler, just as effective IMO.https://www...

@big_gregYou’re right about the appreciation on the One-Steps, I’ve seen out of print copies posted for sale at 3x their selling price. Same thing with other audiophile labels sold in limited runs. I agree on the UHQR disc’s sound quality.
Any idea which headphones I’d like?
Good decision to wait until you can put some on your head and ears. The comfort factor is a priority, if they aren’t comfortable it won’t matter how they sound. With your budget I’d buy an amp, a pair of open back and a pair of closed back ‘phones....

@tablejockey VPI Classic, nice turntable! I had a HW19mkIII for 16 years before upgrading.
Absolute Polarity Switch
My phono pre has a rocker switch, my pre amp a rocker and also a remote control for polarity. I can switch it on the fly from the listening chair via remote. Occasionally I can hear a difference but when I do, it’s pretty subtle. But there can be ...
How many dealers do you use?
There’s several dealers around PDX and they’ve all been in business for years. I do most of my business with two, one of which sells mainly used gear. This past year their businesses have done better than ever. They both have treated me well over ...

Finally, a great stylus cleaner-Onzow Zerodust!
I’ve been using the Onzo ZeroDust for years, the lifespan of 4 cartridges. I don’t like lowering the cart onto it as suggested but leave the arm in its rest and gently push the gel onto the stylus’ tip, keeping it away from the cantilever. I pref...
Daily Record cleaning
New and used LP’s are treated in a Audio Desk System ultrasonic cleaner and put in a new Mobile Fidelity record sleeve if needed. Before every play I use a Hunt EDA 6 record brush. I also use an Onzo Zero Dust occasionally to clean the stylus and ...
