Digital Playback Comparison
Drubin, I'll be very interested in the results of your test, particularly in adding the SB3 and Alexis into the mix. I've always burned CD's from my iMac and not my MacBook Pro, but just because I have my complete iTunes library on the LaCie HD ho...
Digital Playback Comparison
I was skeptical too, but apparently it is now "conventional wisdom." See the first paragraph of Robert Hartley's article on p. 60 of the December 2007 issue of The Absolute Sound. Elsewhere I read that Peter McGrath was astounded to hear a CD-R of...
Dummy Guide on What's Needed to hook up Mini Mac
Rbsteho, you are right--I wouldn't recommend for anyone to use a laptop as their primary source. I used mine solely for the purpose of the test. My plan is to get 30ft of coaxial cable and use my iMac desktop computer as a source (iMac-->USB ca...
Dummy Guide on What's Needed to hook up Mini Mac
If you are wanting to get the best sound for the least investment using a Mac as your source, see my thread: Digital Playback Comparison which I posted yesterday. There is a significant difference in sound quality from the different methods of usi...
AVALON Indra ??
I'm very interested in hearing the Indra. I might be trading in my Vandersteen 5's on a new pair of Indra's. I'm glad to hear they have created such a positive impression, Samuel.
AVALON Indra ??
Thaey received a glowing review in HiFi+. Here is a link to the link:http://www.audiorevelation.com/cre/images/avalonacoustics/avalon_indra.pdf
A butt-load spent in cables - how much improvemt?
I believe the expression is "...a boat load of money..." rather than "butt-load". But wait, are you incarcerated?
40ft: speaker cable or interconnect?
You could try Sumiko's OCOS cable, which is constant impedence no matter how long the run. It was at one time a Stereophile "Recommended Component". I'm using it as biwired runs of about 40ft to Vandersteen 5's from a SMc modified DNA225.
macmini spdif out vs. usb
Kana813,I'm actually quite impressed with the sound quality of the current set-up (Mac->optical cable->MF Tri-Vista), and find it sounds as good (some listeners I've had over say "better than")as playing a CD using the Tri-vista as both tran...
Any good cdp with digital inputs
I posed this question in the Reference DACS forum without getting much of a response (I added the requirement that it be a SACD/CD player with digital inputs). I'm wondering if manufactuers are about to get wise to the need for digital inputs and ...
macmini spdif out vs. usb
Marco,Thank you very much for the very informative reply. I don't know if I was the only one helped by your response, but you certainly helped me. I will begin researching what is the most cost effective way of converting a USB signal to SPDIF. Gi...
macmini spdif out vs. usb
This forum seems like the place to ask this question: What is the best combination of outputs/cables/inputs to go from a MacBook Pro to a CD player with coax and optical digital inputs? I'm currently using a Van den Hul cable that is a miniplug at...
Reference DACS: An overall perspective
Henry and Branimir,Thanks for the EMMLabs one box suggestion. I was under the impression that it did not have digital inputs. If it does, that would be high on my list. Was I mistaken? I'm afraid there won't be many good one box players that fit a...
Reference DACS: An overall perspective
I should have mentioned that I favor the Category 2 sound.
Reference DACS: An overall perspective
I would like some recommendations for a DAC or CDP in the $10-$15k or less range that meets these criteria: can play/decode SACD, outstanding redbook performance, and has digital inputs for coax and especially toslink. I want to be able to hook up...
