What if a high end speaker measures really badly?
@erik_squires I don’t think we can say much of anything about that graph, and the others presented here without knowing the level of smoothing applied to the raw data. As I am sure you know anyone who has played around with Room Equalization Wizar...
The real truth about recordings
There is a strong similarity between recordings and photographs, as a means of artistic expression. They both are based on a real experience, and both become different by virtue of the media they are expressed in.
Are there other people like me ? Amazed by their low cost system :)
I’m with you @mahgister . I have found that the difference between a good system and a great system as far less than the difference between a good room and a bad room, or a good recording and a bad recording. I recently saw an interview on the au...
It's your streamer, not your modem
@erik_squires I guess buffering could be done either on the music server, or the streamer itself. For instance, I have an M1 Mac mini that serves as my roon hub, and it delivers the stream to various endpoints on my home network. I suppose it migh...
It's your streamer, not your modem
Erik/Nigel, I don’t think most of the respondents got your point, or perhaps, they don’t agree with it. Increased buffering capacity is not an expensive, exotic feature on a streamer, yet the respondents above are mentioning some of the most expen...
Old phones as streaming sources
Interesting discussion so far. Thanks to all of you Who’ve taken time to contribute. Stepping back a bit, I noticed on this thread, but also many many others that “quality “is either expressly or implicitly referenced to another piece of similar e...

Old phones as streaming sources
@soix I respect your contributions to other threads but frankly in this one you have not brought much to the table other than relying on cost and other peoples opinions to support your view. I was already aware of those items before I started the ...
for streaming why not computer/galvanic isolation/DAC clock?
@arhgef FOMO is a real threat. I am getting into DIY. The next goal is to find a good high efficiency speaker and build SET amplifiers - lot to learn. This post is more about trying to understand what is happening, and how these things are engine...
Expectation and musical perception
That is a perfect analogy for something demonstrated in an earlier portion of the Closer to Truth episode where a very familiar tune is played but it has been altered to randomly assign each note to an octave above or below it. It is unrecognizabl...
Expectation and musical perception
I’m glad you like the link @mahgister, you were one of the people I was thinking of when I decided to post it. I have enjoyed some of your postings on the nature of music and sound. I totally agree that price and sound quality of audio gear have a...
Old phones as streaming sources
Hey @soix unlike some others on this forum I don't hold myself out as a self-annointed expert. I am merely a thinking human who likes audio gear and music. That exactly why I share my limitations. Younger folks may hear things quite differently, b...
for streaming why not computer/galvanic isolation/DAC clock?
PS- you might have more to gain by playing around with room acoustics or even going for an entirely different type of speaker, just for the variety it offers. Have fun!
for streaming why not computer/galvanic isolation/DAC clock?
I have a late model M1 Macmini streaming into an RME ADI2 and it sounds pretty darn good. As @ghdprentice suggests the only way to know if it can get better is to sub in a high level streamer, but I think you could be at a level where it will be h...

I hope you will report your findings back here if you do. I'm interested.
