What is your scariest moment in High End audio?
Sitting next to an old guy listening to a pair B&W Nautilus. He had the remote sandwiched between the tablet as he was searching for music, he was slowly and inadvertently turning the volume up as a song was ending! When the next song came on,...
Is there a ROON sound?
Man, audiophile’s are something aren’t they?! It’s a file streaming on a file transfer system. They don’t manipulate the file in any way to change the sound. If there is a difference in the sound compared to say a CD or any other platform (assumin...
What type of speaker would sound better?
@gdaddy1  +1 I have used your automotive manufacturing analogy many times to debunk the need for a Speaker to cost $100K+ (or $50K for that matter!!). Speakers just aren’t that complex and science on good sound is pretty much decided outside of d...
Real experience - Balanced or Unbalanced between Luxman Pre & Power Amps
@roadcykler  While I share your pessimism for cables making major differences, there are electrical properties from one cable to the next which can make a difference (like capacitance). With that said, almost NO manufacturer (besides BJC’s) will ...
Diamond vs Aluminum tweeters for B&W 800 series
@elliottbnewcombjr  It would be interesting to see how your proposed Morels measure with the stock B&W crossovers. My guess is that it won’t be flat. Whether you prefer the experimental outcome or not is purely subjective….
Diamond vs Aluminum tweeters for B&W 800 series
@elliottbnewcombjr  You are missing the point. To achieve the desired frequency response when changing tweeter (or any driver regardless of the material) requires changing the crossover. There is no getting around this unless you just happen to g...
Diamond vs Aluminum tweeters for B&W 800 series
My experience with speaker design has shown me that tweeter material isn’t nearly as important as the designers choice of crossover values. A bright commercial speaker isn’t bright because of the tweeter material, it’s bright because they wanted i...
Sound signature comparison - Streamer/DACs
If the OP thinks his LUMIN is ‘warm’ then I would suggest he get out and discover more DAC/Streamers! I would never personally describe the LUMIN products as warm. If anything, they are a little sharp around the edges compared to the Rose RS-150 a...
Integrated that blew you away
@lalitk  You are spot on with your description of Accuphase!    I’m shocked no one has mentioned Esoteric….
Focal Diva Utopia active speakers less than impressive.
@rick_n  You say the line is long in the tooth, but I’m curious what you believe can be done to change that? There is precious little innovation in speaker design. Mostly revolving around cone/driver material. If the Utopia line sounds good today...
Borresen X3 at Axpona
The checkerboard pattern you see on many speakers these days is a wonder material called Textreme. It wasn’t designed for the speaker industry but was adapted to great affect! I believe it is lighter and stiffer than CF with greater damping qualit...
Standmount speaker suggestion
I really wonder if you people recommending absolutely obscure brands have ever heard these brands and more importantly, heard them in your own rooms or at a dealer who has attempted to optimize the setup?! Should the OP just take your word for it?...
Standmount speaker suggestion
A DIY Kit is the best bang for the buck especially in a Standmount!
Is this a new trend?
Standmount Speakers are really all about economics. The foot-print of a stand and a floorstander are generally the same! However, the cabinet is by far the most expensive part of a speaker and the materials and labor involved with making a Standmo...
Need to learn about Audio Research
You should keep the H390 and add a Tube Preamp and/or even a Tube DAC like Primaluna. You’re not going to get better for less than $10K than the Hegel.
