Am I wasting money on the theory of Bi-amping?
I've considered bi-amping my JBL 1400's, whenever you bi-amp you need to modify the crossover - I believe. May be worthwhile, although crossover design is a black art IMO.
As A Youngster, What Unit Puqued Your Interest In All This?
I walked into a hi-fi store in the early 70's, there was a lineup of JBL speakers from bookshelfs to a Paragon. Loved them straight away, always have, tried other speakers but always returned to JBL.
Leaving my amplifier on ok?
Dam! Don't you hate being wrong! However out here in the boonies, lightning strikes are frequent and without a very fast over voltage protection it can and will damage your gear.
Leaving my amplifier on ok?
Electronic components don't wear out like for example mechanical components. But a mains voltage spike or lightning strike - that'll fry your amp and perhaps other components - nicely. Maybe unplug your system if you're not using it for long peri...
Curious to know what you guys think/like about Pink Floyd's early work
I loved Pink Floyd's early albums. Umugumma was definitely out there, my favorite and much underrated was Atom Heart Mother, very different and a classic. Echoes was another outstanding album, then they went for a more commercial sound and lost I...
High end speakers at low volume
My experience is that small speakers work better at low volume than large. I had a pair of JBL 4350's and they sounded as good as a $10 clock radio at low volume. Horn speakers are efficient and thus produce high volume but for a few exceptions a...
JBL 4367 shoutiness remedies?
I've owned many JBL's, and yes the horn loaded speakers are "shouty". The 1400's I own now are an exception.  Part of the problem is that JBL's are dynamic - little sound compression on transients, this can be tiring. Exhilarating but fatiguing....
Modifying Crossovers
I had an old pair of JBL 212's with the sub given to me. I changed the capacitors to new Sonus (I think they were called) capacitors. They really sounded great - big difference, so much so that I regretted selling them.   Capacitors don't wear o...
What is the proper loudness for listening?
That depends on how many glasses of wine you had!
Will increasing speaker cable AWG make a difference in sound quality?
You have to remember that not only speakers but to a lesser extent cables exhibit impedance, and together they form a impedance circuit.     To lessen that effect use thicker/lower gauge wire.
room size question.
You don't want room dimensions that cause standing waves/resonance. For example a 12x12x12' room would have a fundamental resonance of whatwever that frequency would be. Best to have a where the dimensions are not the same. Knock down a few walls,...
Why does pulling out main speakers from wall improve sound?
I assume that because bass spreads out in all directions - 360 degrees. Being too close to walls increases the bass as well as muddying the sound.
which is a better speaker
JBL have a well earned reputation for punchy sound and with the right equipment and setting can make music come alive like no others, IMO. The 120ti have top notch coned speakers. Sorry, don't know much about Pioneer.
Can a Amp be "timeless" and compete with todays amps?
My old Phase Linear 400B amp is almost 50 yo. I doubt that I could tell the difference between it and my newer amps in a blind AB test. Maybe others could, but as others here have said, amps haven't changed much over the years. Transistors and res...
Will I benefit from a subwoofer with 20Hz speakers?
@bishop148 The point is not more bass! The point is to get the bass right. If the bass is deficient, the ear will perceive the system as being tilted to the highs; if there is too much bass the ear will perceive the system as being muffled in...
