Where do the tubes go?
Fair comments Newbee. I've owned ARC tube gear for almost 10 years. Perhaps I'm lucky, but the only maintenance issues I've experienced related to blown bias resisters. Fortunately, there's an ARC authorized service tech near my house who also hap...
Amp for Revel Ultima Salon 2
This is a bit dated, but how would my ARC Ref 150 (150 wpc) fare? The room is not large. About 20 to 25 feet long, say 20 feet wide and 7 feet high. My Paradigm 8 v3s are also supposed to be current hogs, but the Ref 150 drives them to ear splitti...
Survey:What Speakers Do You Want To Demo in Store?
IMO, Zd542 and Peter make very fair points. Auditioning speakers, indeed most gear, is a daunting task. As Zd ... says - equipment set-up is key, especially when looking to compare speakers. And the reverse is also true. And what about electrical ...
MC cart rebuild frequency: a question for you
I've crossed this bridge many times. Peter Ledermann has retipped my Soundsmith VPI Zephyr many times already. Peter told me once or twice that a cartridge should be inspected every 1000 hours or so for wear and tear. It has been my experience tha...
VPI Direct Drive Turntable
Folks, as a fellow VPI customer, I think you're being hard on HW. I read that a submarine motor is being used because the Classic DD can spin discs under water. Now ... if I can waterproof the rest of my rig, I can move the whole shebang into a ho...

Hey Nmf ... take a look at the link below -- CD-8 for sale from an ARC dealer in sunny California. This may not be of much help because it's a 110 volt player. http://app.audiogon.com/listings/cd-sacd-players-audio-research-reference-cd-8-compact-...

Nmf ..., I used to own a CD-7 with the upgraded power supply. I've read comments from folks who said they loved the CD-7. IMO, I think the CD-8 is a better all-around sounding unit. I appreciate your frustration. On occasion, I see that a pre-owne...

Hey Nmf ... all's well that ends well. It's been my fortunate experience that all of the ARC gear I've bought (pre-owned or refurbed) has been in pristine condition. But also, ARC gear just doesn't wear out (in the R&M sense) all that quickly....
What brand is most recognized by non-audiophiles?
Crown Royal. HaHaHa
Burn-in and Equipmemt Value
Mceljo .... You write, "I am not sure how much of what I hear with my tube amp is just warm up vs. actual break-in, but it seems that something has changed. I don't believe that solid state really benefits from warm up or break-in and this goes fo...
Problem after using a CD laser lens cleaner . . .
Krellman and Tom, an fyi -- I just posted in another OP that ARC recommends using a camel hair photo lens brush to dust off the laser lens in their CDPs.
KIND OF BLUE
Ben, is the HD Tracks version of "KOB" redbook CD or a higher rez format?
What Is Your Favorite Vintage Amplifier?
Hey Pack, I recall reading many times that the old Phase Linear 400 was a/k/a the "Flame Linear." Glad to read you're luvin' it, but don't leave it unattended -- even if it's unplugged. Keep a fire extinguisher handy. LOL ;-')
Burn-in and Equipmemt Value
Mceljo, I for one have zero issue with buying used gear -- period!!! In fact, I prefer it for the reasons you just mentioned. Case in point: ARC says that most of its gear requires 600 hours of burn in. Who the heck wants to wait 600 hours!!! So w...

FYI:ARC's advice on the "care and feeding" of the CD-8:"Hi Bruce,"The CD8 is pretty maintenance free. The main thing is to replace tubes every 2/4000 hours and keep the laser door closed when not in used. I would visibly inspect the laser lens for...
