Most unusual/mesmerizing female voice.
A recent thread reminded me of Lucinda Williams. Her voice is immediately recognizable, and though her pitch is often not-quite-on (though not nearly off as, say, Johnny Cash), her singing just oozes character and personality---far more important ...
2016: a new year for music....
Tostadosunidos---It was in the mid-to-late 80’s I saw Lucinda playing around L.A. She’s lived there off and on over the years. I was introduced to her at Club Lingerie by the manager of The Long Ryders, whom I was there to see and hear. Their drum...
2016: a new year for music....
Lucinda has her mojo back. I used to see her play around town (L.A.), in the long break between her Rough Trade album and getting signed to WB and recording her breakthrough album, Car Wheels On A Gravel Road. She was working days at a local recor...
Most unusual/mesmerizing female voice.
My current favorite singer, possessing an immediately recognizable voice, is Iris Dement. There is a clip on You Tube of Emmylou Harris harmonizing with her. Iris is a great songwriter as well as singer.
Most unusual/mesmerizing female voice.
I haven't read all the nominations on this thread, so she may have already been mentioned, but Emmylou Harris has a distinctive and unusual voice. A pretty fair amount of vibrato, which I usually distain, but for some reason doesn't bother me in h...
Speakers that open up at low volume levels
Jeff---The ET LFT-8, an excellent loudspeaker with a for-some-reason very low profile. You're right, it's rather inefficient, yet imo sounds better at low volume (as well as high!) than Magneplanar's 1.7, a very similiar low-efficiency planar. A l...
Tonearm recommendation
The best place to damp the arm/cartridge is at the headshell---the rational for the Townshend Rock turntable. The trough of silicon damping fluid is viscous enough to drastically reduce the resonance exhibited by all phono systems, but not so grea...
Speaker Pairing to Tube amp (Please help)
Two of the three stores having never heard of Rega needn't make you wonder if you are even looking at the right brands, but rather at the right stores!
Audio Research service
ARC lost the remote? Lame!
Review: Bedini Electronics BA-801 Amplifier
I still have the little 25/25, a popular choice for the original ("57") Quad loudspeaker.
JL Audio e112 compared to SV Sound SB-13 subwoofers
No, but there IS a comparison between the SVS SB-13 Ultra and the Rythmik F15HP. I don't recall where I saw it, but a Google search should bring it up.
Dan Hicks has passed away.
All true. And, his albums Where's The Money and Striking It Rich feature unusually good sound, a pleasant surprise. I saw him live in a converted movie theater near San Jose City College in '73, and he had added a good jazz drummer to his band. Th...
Linkwitz Lab Loundpeaker baffle
Danny Richie, open baffle loudspeaker and woofer/subwoofer designer at GR Research, is a strong advocate of baffles built to have their resonant frequency outside the passband of the driver(s) mounted on them. He routinely uses two layers of 3/4" ...
In a lot of these threads people say without the room being treated
Most of the comments here are made in regard to the treatment of midrange and high frequencies. The real serious problem in a small space is in the bass frequencies, the result of room dimensions. A very good explanation and discussion of that sub...
I have seen some Interesting comments about Mcintosh lately
I’m hoping when I get set up in Vancouver/Portland there are some good stations worthy of my MR78. FM radio is still a great way to learn of new artists and music. College stations are usually much better than commercial (the one in Northridge in ...
