ARC Ref 5se inferior to LS28?
The mode switch I am referring to is a rotary knob providing Stereo/Reverse/Mono/Left/Right, all sent to the pre-amps main outputs (not it's tape out jacks). Just what I need for those horrid 60's pseudo-stereo LP's!
Has anyone had experiences good or bad with speaker isolation or isolation in general ?
Schubert's pronouncement violates the idea that spikes are mechanical diodes---a one-way street for vibrations. Once one has seen the truth---that spikes provide not isolation but rather coupling, he is ready for real isolation. Watch Max Townshen...
List of artists that have never lost quality throughout entire career
Many artists have "arcs" in the quality of the work. Up, then down, hopefully then up again. There is the thought that most have only "so much" in them, some only one album. What a depressing idea for those just beginning. I can think of many band...
Random question/ thoughts about stuff for sale here
When one finds himself absorbed by the music---becoming one with it, the gear becomes secondary, just the means to the end. When that doesn't happen, time to change something I guess.
ARC Ref 5se inferior to LS28?
Anyone who gets on the ARC train is going to be put through this until he jumps off. Why not instead buy from a designer/company who keeps a model in the line for many years, offering occasional upgrades to the basically "correct/finished" circuit...
The Band on MFSL
MFSL also recently put out The Band’s studio collaboration with Dylan, the Planet Waves album. It came out on Asylum Records in ’74 (the only Dylan album not on Columbia Records), and is really, really good. It contains "Forever Young", a song you...
The Band on MFSL
Disagreement welcome slaw! I actually haven’t compared back-to-back my RL lime green Capitol pressings of the 1st and 2nd Band albums to the MFSL ones now available. I just acquired Mint copies of the Capitols, as well as the current LP and SACD v...
The Band on MFSL
Oh, and the 3rd and 4th Band albums, "Stage Fright" and "Cahoots", are also available on MFSL LP and SACD. Though not up to the level of their first two albums (nothing is!), they are well worth having. Todd Rundgren produced SF, and he was not up...
The Band on MFSL
The Bands second album (S/T, "brown") album was once again released on LP by Mobile Fidelity in 2013, catalog no. 1-419; they had already put out a version in the 80’s, around the time of your copy of Music From Big Pink. By the way, MFSL has also...
Best type of Sub to consider?
ajant---Yes! And that is a very good idea, one which Danny Richie himself has done when showing at RMAF (where the OB/Dipole Sub was voted "Best Bass At The Show" multiple years in the recent past), using the OB’s in the front of the room and F12G...
A higher level than Mullard in tube quality?
When I spoke with Tim de Paravicini (EAR-Yoshino designer) at the 2015 Newport Show, he told me the old Mullards were his favorite tube brand. I don't know whether or not he does his designing with Mullard tubes installed in his circuits.
Chuck Berry passed away today....
Damn, Willie Dixon! I never got to see him, but I did Big Joe Turner, backed by The Blasters when Lee Allen (on tenor sax) was in the band. Lee played in Little Richards band in the 50's. There's a only a few of the originals left, gotta seen 'em ...
Solid State Amps for Quad ESL 57?
Geoff is SO right about the stock perforated metal screens on the 57---horrid things. Jerry Crosby (known for his QUAD 63 mod) at one time made a replacement for it, with much larger holes and much less resonance.
Chuck Berry passed away today....
The documentary and filmed concert Keith did for Chuck, "Hail, Hail, Rock ’n’ Roll", is well worth watching. Chucks original pianist Johnnie Johnson was still living at the time, and is in the band Keith put together for the concert, which also in...
Solid State Amps for Quad ESL 57?
If a pair of low-watt Pass amps are too rich for your blood, the old Bedini 25/25 is considered one of the all-time best ss amps for the Quad. They show up from time to time, the last one I saw selling for $795 here on Audiogon.
