Whats on your turntable tonight?
Great question slaw. A few I can name off the top of my head that are as close to perfect as any I’ve heard (excluding The Band’s first two albums, which go without saying ;-) :Bob Dylan: Blonde On Blonde, John Wesley Harding, Planet Waves, a few ...
Whats on your turntable tonight?
@6t5-gto, I too prefer Son Volt to Wilco, and Jay Farrar to Jeff Tweedy as both a songwriter and a singer. I’ve been following them from their Uncle Tupelo (great band name!) days, and have always wondered why Tweedy gets all the accolades.

I would look into replacing the European voltage motor with a U.S. voltage one. Don't worry, it's not too difficult or expensive. Do you have a local turntable technician who can do the job?

Oops slaw, shoulda posted my best wishes here instead of on the other thread. Again, hope the storm passes with minimal damage inflicted.

slaw, Rachel Maddow just showed how the storm was hovering over the Carolinas, moving only 3 miles an hour, dumping lots of rain on ya’ll. Hope your house (and especially your music collection and hi-fi!) and family are okay, and the damage is min...
Autoformers, The Benefits in matching amp to speaker
@partroysound---Yeah, at Pass Labs. Or Reno Hi-Fi, First Watt and Pass Labs' primary retailer. atmasphere’s Marchand suggestion is worth looking into, though their x/o’s contain Opamps (if that bothers you) and are known to have occasional reliabi...

Could be slaw. I don’t imagine RR would own two studios, but it’s possible. If it’s located in Malibu, I’m sure it is. My favorite studio in L.A. is Ocean Way, where Ry Cooder records. GREAT sounding albums come out of there, including John Hiatt’...
Neutral or Detailed. You can't have both
The first really good tweeters I heard---the RTR ESL's---used by Dave Wilson in his WAMM and ESS in their pre-Heil AMT Transtatic---had the combination of detail, nature timbre, and liquid transparency that the best ESL's are known for. Current ES...
Pieces of music that digital can't get right
Really good cymbals---Paiste 602's, old Zildjian's made in Turkey (played the best Jazz drummers in the 1950's and 60's), and modern Turkish-made Bosphorus---all of which I own and play---can sound too "splashy" after sub-par digitization.

Country Fair; seems perfect! When The Band took the stage at Woodstock, Levon Helm said to the audience: "Hope ya'll like Country music". I can only imagine how out-of-place they felt at that celebration of the Counter Culture, with which they sha...

I happened to have just logged on slaw! By the way, the studio The Band built in Malibu in the early/mid-70’s, Shangri La---formerly a brothel, is now owned by Rick Rubin. It was in Shangri La that the interviews Martin Scorsese conducted with The...

Sure slaw, it was Sammy Davis Jr’s, not home studio, but pool house, in which The Band and producer John Simon set up their equipment and rented recorder. One day I’ll write out the whole story of why Music From Big Pink and the brown album sound ...

Fair enough, brother! Just to be clear, it’s not vocal perfection I hear in The Band. They aren’t note perfect like CSN (whose harmonies I find too "pretty", a little prissy. I think it may be Graham Nash’s fault ;-), being kind of loose and slopp...

Good post jriggy. I read Jerry or Bob say it was CSN’s harmonizing that prompted them to start trying to sing. And I know Jerry played banjo in Folk/Bluegrass bands around Stanford University in Palo Alto (whose Frat houses my High School garage b...
