If you haven't yet discovered Rosie Flores.....
@tomcy6: Your comment raises a topic that has crossed my mind over the years. Artists or bands who remain favorites of a cult level audience---not ever becoming huge stars, in many cases have longer, more productive careers than do more "succes...
Placing Instrument Separation of Large Ensembles in Recordings
Consumers are at the mercy of record producers and engineers. As @onhwy61 and @rick_n stated, there are a number of different recording philosophies and techniques, each with it's own resulting sound characteristics. If you ever come upon any ...
Drinking Songs playlest... What am I missing?
  - The Band (w/ Van Morrison): "4% Pantomime" - The Electric Flag: "Wine" - Muddy Waters: "Sittin’ Here And Drinkin’" - Lightnin’ Hopkins: "Ain’t Nothin’ Like Whiskey" - Billy Boy Arnold: "Whiskey, Beer, And Reefer" - Elvin Bishop: "My Whis...
"New" model VPI?
@chadsort: And it doesn't have any form of isolation, unlike their original HW-19 with it's spring suspension.
What is your top sexy song?
Good one @tomcarr, written by Randy Newman. His recording of the song may be found on his Sail Away album.
Phil Lesh
I've known some musicians who characterize that kind of playing as lead bass. One of the best bassists I ever played with loved Phil, Jack Bruce and Casady, and Rick Danko. The two "best" electric bassists I’ve heard live were John Entwislle...
In the sand box
Speaking of sand boxes and vibrations: Have ya’ll heard the story about Brian Wilson and his sandbox? Sometime in 1966 Brian had the idea of having the grand piano in the living room of his Bel Air mansion installed within a sandbox, so that h...
The Shure V15 V with a Jico SAS/B stylus VS The Soundsmith Hyperion MR and Lyra Atlas SL
@richardbrand: While it appears the tweeter of the DIPTYQUE could be a little closer to the midrange/bass driver next to it, the distance between the two is not too bad. The crossover point is 1600Hz, the wavelength of which is 21.45 centimeter...
Tune of the Day
"Get Out Of Denver" by Dave Edmunds. IMO a vastly better version than the original by the song’s writer, Bob Seger.   https://youtu.be/vhbV2yZidrE?si=xrfyw532RsYSyri1   And here is Dave’s version of John Fogerty’s song "Almost Saturday Nigh...
Oldies that stick in your head...
Here's a great version of "Where Or When" by Dave Edmunds. Dreamy.   https://youtu.be/i4rNpl-H6RA?si=iqCqU7wseNjiE3px
What exactly is PRaT???
My introduction to the term came in the 1980’s, from members of the Linn "cult". Linn dealers would put on an LP, and act as if they couldn’t keep their feet from a tappin'. What a simple-minded concept, one entirely too subjective to try and d...
The Shure V15 V with a Jico SAS/B stylus VS The Soundsmith Hyperion MR and Lyra Atlas SL
THIS is the dipole/planar loudspeaker I find myself lusting to hear. At $17,000/pr I can’t buy them, so it’s purely academic.   https://youtu.be/KQh66jM7aLE?si=ia3J7sKU7Eh9Z-MT
Music with Titles that get you to think
Oops, I shoulda pulled out my McGarrigle sisters albums (s/t, Dancer With Bruised Knees, and French Record) and looked at their first names.
"New" model VPI?
Right @mofimadness, the biggest difference being that the HW-19’s floating subchassis was isolated from the base and plinth with a 4-spring suspension. Also, the HW-19's top plate was a sheet of aluminum (stainless steel in the Mk.4 iteration) ...
Holy cow: Ringo produced by T Bone Burnett!
You go Sina! Not to be overly-critical---she is very young---but you can clearly hear her tendency to "rush"---play ahead of the "pocket", very common in young drummers. This is more severe when she gets to the "bridge" section of the song. O...
