Who makes great active preamps ? Tube or solid state or hybrid.
Excellent list, @lukaske.
Tight bass sub recommendations
I've accompanied both electric and acoustic basses (with and without a pickup going to an amp), and reproducing an acoustic is a more demanding task that reproducing an electric. Most speakers and subs---and most importantly, rooms!, to one degree...
Best Tonearm Lifter?
At one time Express Machining (the company in San Jose, CA that makes the excellent aftermarket parts for Rega tables and arms) was making a real nice end-of-play tone arm lifter appropriately named The Lift. It was offered in chrome and gold orig...

@millercarbon, one thing to be aware of is that there may be more to the difference between a given company’s sealed and ported subs than the sealed or ported enclosure itself. Rythmik Audio offers subs with either a 15" or 18" woofer in both a se...
How often do you have to service your Studer or Otari deck ? Home not pro environment.
No @inna, I meant it is economically unwise to buy a Revox (and I'm assuming a Studer) that is in need of restoration rather than one that needs none. A good working condition example can probably be acquired for less than the price of a not-so-ho...
Whats on your turntable tonight?
Jackson Browne is SUCH a great songwriter, and has always had a superb band. @udog, MFSL is Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs, the album reissue (LP, SACD) company.

Restoring Revox A77's is expensive. I sent mine to the national service center in Nashville years ago, and the restoration cost me more than the A77. It's like servicing an old BMW; there comes a time when it no longer makes economic sense.
Phoenix Engineering Roadrunner
The tiny magnet that attaches to the bottom of the platter is being sold on ebay by a Phoenix Engineering dealer who has some left.
Is there any equipment that can do this?
J. Gordon Holt wrote about this subject a lot years ago in Stereophile (surround sound for music was a passion of his). The Hafler/Dynaco system sought to provide a cheap, easy way to simulate discrete 4-channel sound from 2-channel recordings, us...
What's your favorite lyric from a song?
@tostadosunidos, thanks for the reminder of why Dylan is the most revolutionary lyricist in Pop music history. "A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall" was recorded about a year before The Beatles recorded their original boy/girl love songs like "I Wanna Hold...
RIAA, Questions only please
Thanks @imhififan. Wasn't the author Gary A. Galo involved with Audio Amateur magazine?
Why do some manufacturers reverse preamp polarity in the first place?
There is a book on the sole subject of absolute polarity, The Wood Effect by Clark Johnson.
RIAA, Questions only please
Roger, as the filter that goes out to 20Khz takes only two resistors and two capacitors to create, and the value of those parts in well known, why do we see variations from perfect RIAA eq on the order of anywhere from 0.1 to 1.0 dB or more amongs...
Why do some manufacturers reverse preamp polarity in the first place?
And in some pre-amps that contain a phono stage (or in a separate phono amp), that stage (or amp) may be of inverted polarity while the line stage is not (or visa versa). What are you gonna do, reverse your speaker leads depending on whether you a...
What are you streaming tonight?
Ah yeah @uberwaltz, The Flamin’ Groovies---one of my all-time fave bands! Their Shake Some Action album is my favorite of theirs, produced by Dave Edmunds. I shared the stage with them in ’82, and we hung out for a few hours. Cyril and I talked ab...
