And Barnes & Noble is selling their exclusive version of the LP: the cover signed, the vinyl black & gray splatter. Guess I gotta get both!
What's in your CDP tonight? the minority report
Three related CD’s:- Dwight Twilley: Soundtrack. Released in 2012, I’m just now getting back into Twilley, the one-time would-be savior of Rock ’n’ Roll (The Dwight Twilley Band’s 1976 debut album on Shelter Records---Sincerely---is a Top-10 Power...
The Placebo Effect
The film on Gore Vidal (The United States Of Amnesia) is fantastic! I was a watcher of Firing Line, the PBS show hosted by William F. Buckley. Bill and Gore---a regular guest---really got into it, usually on an intellectual level, sometimes more p...
Anyone's tried repairing/upgrading original Vandersteen 1 speakers?
@nmmusicman: Yeah, I remember that speaker. It and Nelson are pictured together on an old (digest sized, J. Gordon Holt era) Stereophile magazine cover. I need to dig out my copy and reread the report on the speaker.
Custom plinth
@brunomarcs: Yes, the staint hat is applied to the wood veneer is also applied to the exposed edge of the Birch ply. Since that edge is so small, the lack of grain is not noticeable.
Why do we want to distortions?
And there you have it: Ralph (atmasphere) just gave you a thumbnail version of the master-class in amplifier design he could teach!
TONE
Make your own music recordings! Borrow or rent a pair of good mics and a reel-to-reel recorder, and ask a musician friend (you do have them, right?) if you can record a live performance. Once the tape is rolling, listen intently to the music and t...
Open Baffle Opinions - I Won't go back to Boxed Speakers Evr Again (maybe....)
Ralph's (atmasphere) advice matches my experience with planar loudspeakers. The common wisdom for dipole/wall spacing is at least 3' from the front wall (behind the speakers), but that is incorrect. As Ralph said, we want the rear wave to reach ou...
Berlioz Requiem
Another vote for the Colin Davis w/ The London Symphony Orchestra & Chorus version. Phillips 6700 019. Good sq, too.
Vinyl Sleeves and Jackets
Ya’ll need to go to the Vinyl Storage Solutions website, and check out Mike’s clever (patented, I’m sure) new double-pocket outer sleeves. He also makes regular single pocket sleeves, fabricated using the best (in terms of vinyl storage) plastic. ...
Whats on your turntable tonight?
@dayglow: Are those grades on a scale of 5? Or 10?!
Custom plinth
Incredible! Love the Festool's, I make do with my Bosch ;-) .When Art Dudley made a plinth for his Thorens TD-124, he used multiple pieces of Baltic Birch ply, but then didn't veneer, leaving the exposed Birch layers (13 per sheet, a stack of 6 pi...
Anyone's tried repairing/upgrading original Vandersteen 1 speakers?
To replace a woofer can be a cheap fix. In 1981 I bought a pair of ESS TranStatics I’s, introduced in 1970 and discontinued a few years later (with the success of the ESS/Heil AMT 1). One of the two speakers had had it’s KEF B-139 woofer replaced ...
Why do we want to distortions?
The question posed is a red herring. "Tube amplifiers sound better because of the euphonic distortions they add to the music." Where the Hell did you read or hear that?!Bill Johnson always said he used whatever technology was available to make the...

I don’t ordinarily go in for colored vinyl LP’s (isn’t black a color? ;-), but this one looks great: the upcoming John Hiatt w/ The Jerry Douglas Band album, Record Store Day edition. The vinyl is a very cool-looking "Coke bottle" green. I’m getti...
