Thorens, TD-125 MKII I bought a TD-125 Mk.2 new in '73. It was defective out of the box: bad electronics. I had it in the warranty station I don't know how many times, and finally sold it. Tell your friend to look for a VPI HW-19 Mk.2, 3, or 4. Much better table imo.
The great Don Everly has left us. Ah yes @pehare, The Louvin Brothers! Emmylou Harris has said Gram Parsons turned her onto them, for which she is grateful. No Louvin Brothers, no Everly Brothers? ;-)We all stand on the shoulders of giants. That includes Dylan and Simon & Garfu...
Audible illusions Slow customer service Ric Schultz of EVS (Electronic Visionary Systems) might be willing to work on an AI pre-amp. He worked at the company for a while (in the 80's or 90's, I believe), and came up with a series of mods for the Modulus 2.
surround processor? If you can find one, the Angstrom 200 Surround Sound Processor / DAC / Pre-Amp, designed and built by Mike Moffat of Theta and Schitt Audio.
The first system you had that was "high end/audiophile", by you standards @tomic601: I discovered the high end in 1971 (Infinity Servo-Static’s, ESS TranStatics, SAE electronics, then ARC), and commenced visiting every HE shop in the Bay Area. One was The Audio Clinic in Berkeley, which I visited to hear the Dayton Wrig...
Do you all agree when Prince said the 60s, 70s and 80s were the golden ages of music? I couldn't agree more @stuartk. The album's cultural significance is one thing, it's music quite another. Reminds me of how Atlantic Records' President Ahmet Ertegun characterized Cream's Disraeli Gears album when he heard the tapes: "Psychedelic ...
Another must have for all you McIntosh Fanboys! One item McIntosh lovers might want is the book written about the company and it's products by Ken Kessler. He also did books on QUAD and Audio Research Corporation.
Liquid stylus cleaner without solvent Last Stylus Cleaner (it comes with a very dense circle of short bristles on a plastic handle with which to apply to the stylus), followed by an application of Stylast. I’ve been using both since they were introduced in the 1980’s.
Do you all agree when Prince said the 60s, 70s and 80s were the golden ages of music? @coltrane1: Give a listen to "Rag Mama Rag" by The Band. On this song pianist Richard Manuel takes Levon Helm’s place on the drumset, organist Garth Hudson moving over to piano. Hudson is very much a fan and student of Jazz (he loves the playing o...
Loudest Sound Ever? The Ramones at The Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in the 1980’s. The Civic is a horrendously bad sounding room, a large cement bunker. Prior to that, it was the night I did an 8-hr audition for a really good San Jose band, from 9 PM until the Sun c...
Do you all agree when Prince said the 60s, 70s and 80s were the golden ages of music? "I'm not suggesting there's no Rock guys who played Jazz." True @coltrane1, you far more than suggested it:"Motown's musical backbone was having music preformed by Jazz musicians. Rock can't claim that. Only Motown can."By the way, James Jamerson,...
What will you pay for a new LP? Original 1950’s-60’s Mint copies of Blue Note LP’s sell for up to (depending on title) thousands of dollars. You can get a new reissue (mastered by Kevin Gray, pressed at QRP) of many of them for $50-$65 (the Tone Poet series, done by Joe Harley--...
Designers -who's been around the longest ? Nelson a one trick pony? What a silly thing to say; he's only the most versatile amplifier designer in the history of hi-fi! He makes amplifiers employing dozens of different circuits, of all types and topologies. As for Frank, the topic of this th...
Do you all agree when Prince said the 60s, 70s and 80s were the golden ages of music? Earl Palmer (New Orleans) and Jim Keltner (Tulsa) both come from Jazz backgrounds. Palmer is the drummer heard on Little Richard’s 1950’s Rock ’n’ Roll records, and on some of Phil Spector’s 1960’s procductions (along with Hal Blaine, also a Jazz ...
Movie Stars that can handle musical instrument well Levon Helm was (he of course played Sissy Spacek’s father in Coal Miner’s daughter), Dwight Yoakam (Sling Blade), and Billy Bob Thornton is the drummer in a Pop/Rock group. Loudon Wainwright III has done some acting, as has Sting. Jeff Goldblum is... |
