Wendell Diller: "You don't wanna put a subwoofer with a Magneplanar; it doesn't work."
Excellent post @rhg3! I too chose the XLR version of the Rythmik A370 plate amp, gladly forfeiting the high-level hookup provisions in exchange for balanced/XLR low-level ones. At hi-fi shows Danny Richie uses pairs of the OB/Dipole sub in the fr...
Tune of the Day
"You’re Running Wild", by Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams, which makes the hair on my head stand straight up. A new-ish recording of the old song originally done by The Louvin Brothers (the model for the Everly Brothers, and a favorite of the l...
Dr Gizmo Abducted!
Yes!!! Harvey Rosenberg, a much needed anti-dote to the likes of Harry Pearson. Art Dudley quit TAS after realizing he could no longer work for the guy. I had a long telephone conversation with Harvey in the late-80's, concerning the Decca pickups...
NRBQ live at The Doug Fir Lounge in Portland this Friday (tomorrow)!
@deadhead1000: Ha, good one! "We Take Requests", an inside joke. Terry Adams is one of the very few Rockers who cites Thelonius Monk and Sun Ra as major influences. His clavinet playing live is the most physical act on stage I’ve ever witnessed! M...
Wendell Diller: "You don't wanna put a subwoofer with a Magneplanar; it doesn't work."
@pedroeb (and @perkri): Silly boys, you missed the joke. Don’t you see the ;-) after the line you quote? I am regularly guilty of giving humans too much credit. For all I know, you don’t even understand the use of irony. Obviously some don’t unde...
Wendell Diller: "You don't wanna put a subwoofer with a Magneplanar; it doesn't work."
Hi Josh, nice to hear from you here. I decided not to respond to @theaudioamp, as he appears to be one of those who knows just enough to be convinced of his lack of ignorance (for instance, everybody knows a dipole does not "load" the room the way...

Joan Osborne: Radio Waves. Live appearances taped in various radio stations. Oughta be great, 'cause imo Joan is better live than on recordings. A really good singer, with great taste in material and musicians.
MoFi controversy
I have long known MoFi wasn’t cutting their lacquers from "the" original master (which "original" master? The 1/4" or 1/2" two or three track tape---commonly used in the late-50’s and early-60’s, or the 2-track "master" mixed from those 3-tacks? O...
Horizontal vs Vertical biamping
Bryston makes a good active x/o, but Nelson Pass makes a great one. If it is too rich for your blood, look for his also very fine First Watt B4. MUCH more versatile than the Bryston, and no op-amps or integrated circuits (100 percent discrete circ...
Michael Fremer leaves Analog Planet
@dogberry: Yep, Harvey Rosenberg was the most interesting, entertaining guy in the entire history of hi-fi. I met him at SoCal retailer Havens & Hardesty, where he did an in-store to introduce his New York Audio Labs Super It phono stage. Har...

I Ran Down Every Dream by Tommy McLain (on Yep Rock Records, LP and CD), his first album in four decades! Produced by C.C. Adcock, with guest appearances by Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello, Augie Myers, Warren Storm, and Van Dyke Parks. How's THAT for h...
Speakers need to be placed close to back wall. Help
At the risk of coming off as a dick, allow me to inform you that the wall behind the loudspeakers is actually the front wall, not the rear. The wall your listening position faces is front, right? Unless you listen with your back to the speakers! I...
Great service from HSU Research
CONSUMER ALERT! Don't buy any of the old HSU models which contain woofers with foam surrounds. The foam runs to dust in no time (at least in the SoCal air), and replacement woofers cost more than the subs are worth.
Maggie 20.7's and Tweeters
Your amp is clipping, a very common cause of tweeters being destroyed; I myself have done it ;-(. All Magneplanars require huge amounts of current, the 20.7 the most of all models (but not more than the woofer panels of my Tympani-T-IVa!). Take a ...
Eminent Technology 8b Speakers - Amp/wattage Recommendations
VERY interesting. Thanks @jwr159.
