rule of thumb: how long do you leave a tube preamp on versus turning it off then back on?
Consider that most failures, tube or solid state, occur when turned on.  This is do to the physical distortion inside the devices as they heat up.  In both cases it is due to thermal expansion and contraction in the material that are heated.  I re...

Black Swan - $1,500  austinaudioworks.com
“Black background” — What really contributes to this phenomenon?
A thought on Noise (the nemesis of silence between notes) starts at the front of the gain stage chain (assuming that all the stages are working right).  It has a simple equation from information theory, Noise = f + 1/f  + 1/f^2 + 1/f^3 . . . .So l...
High Performance Audio - The End?
Perchance the point of it all is lost on many.  This is a hobby centered around an art form.  A form of personal entertainment and inspiration, not just the musical product of the hobby, but the mechanics and theories too.  It engages the mind on ...
Which SUT? .... for .3mv/10 ohms MC cartridge into 3mv MM input sensitivity
What a complex exchange for a relatively straight forward issue.  Look up the Black Swan, fully front panel continuously adjustable loading and gain, tweak it by what I call earball, set all the variables while listening to it.
Who Here is Vertical Bi-Amping?
My current system is 8 individual amps, one for each speaker group.  That is line of six tweeters (one line for each side), a second line of 4  mids (again a line for each side),  a single fill-in for low mid, and 4 woofers in a bin (again 2 bins)...

Who needs a Preamp??
I think you have to look at the evolution of the home music reproduction system to understand the Pre-amp's role.  It is the result of the need for a single point of control and access. It was about control as in signal path switching, balance and...

What makes tape sound better than vinyl ?
Funny that you should ask.  Let me suggest first that In most situations vinyl disks are made from master tapes.  Assuming that entropy works for audio too, information theory tells us that the process of tape to vinyl will cost us information, th...
Are tuners still popular
Even for the astute audiophile the are different kinds of music, one of which is Phil Music, the stuff in between listening sessions.  This is the background music of life.  Radio is prime source of this.  Radio is also a powerful source of local ...
Why do turntables sound different?
The phono system of your hi-fi is just that, a system unto itself.  The turntable, its physical relationship to and with the room, the arm, the cartridge consisting of a stylus and electrical generator, and the load on the cartridge together make ...
Is anyone going to the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest?
I remember my first CES in Chicago, main floor was white good (washers, dryers, stoves, etc) and way back in a room was phonograph, Macintosh, and of course, Bill Johnson who in a way started high-end.  Times do change.I went to RMAF to attend Can...
Just retired and want to get back to vinyl listening
As for a solid base I have used a 4-foot piece of cement sewer pipe stood on end as a base, painted it white which has no aual effect but considerable visual. It will hold your turntable stable in space and time.Barry Thornton
