mixing brands Both Kimber and Nordost make cables at all price points. My small Proac Tablette-based system is a full Kimber loom.My Harbeth-based system is slowly working towards a full Nordost loom.In both cases, I am using the budget lines and getting very g...
Why are so many people trying to sell Harbeths? When I say voicing, I am referring to models following traditional UK speaker values. KEF, B&W, Harbeth, Neat, Kudos etc are all British but all are voiced differently.Even Spendor, which has a Classic line also has a more modern sounding floo...
Why are so many people trying to sell Harbeths? Those three speakers are very different sounding, although all are made by companies with storied histories. Dynaudio is the most neutral and is a reference standard used by many, including the BBC. Wharfedale's budget offerings to my ears are bes...
Why are so many people trying to sell Harbeths? Good question and none of the speakers I mention have real bass down to 30 hz. I would not characterize the brands I mention as broadly European. These have very traditional BBC school voicing. Natural midrange tone, especially with voices and aco...
Why are so many people trying to sell Harbeths? In Canada, the 40.1 is the same price as in the US but in a different currency. My C7 was $3699 last November but the C$ has fallen quite a lot o not sure if pries have been adjusted.
Why are so many people trying to sell Harbeths? Harbeths like Proac, Spendor, Stirling and certain other brands put music first in that classic restrained British way. I thought the comment about listening to classical music as being elitist as odd as classical music was the driving force for a...
1990s speaker recommendation I like the original B&W 600 series - 602 standmounter for that price, not the 603 or 604 which go for much bigger money due to their excellent bass.I like some of the classic Linn stuff from then too but prices will be high.
What's best bookshelf speaker for an 8x10 room? I would not go for a very small speaker in a small room. At low volumes it will sound lean. I use Harbeth C7 and B&W 602 which is a better size for my small (10x12) room than my Proac Tablettes, which I use in my bigger room.
Harbeth SHL5 vs SHL5 PLUS Good question. I find all Harbeth speakers (actually most classic BBC designs) play well at lower volumes, especially the larger ones. The slight exception is the M30.1 which sounds a bit bass light at low volumes, although still quite good. I use...
Harbeth SHL5 vs SHL5 PLUS I have learned that everything makes a difference but I have not heard the veneer thing myself. That would be very hard to test unless you could be sure the speakers are in the exact same sport each time. A couple of degrees of difference in toe i...
Harbeth SHL5 vs SHL5 PLUS The P3 is a scaled down version of the Harbeth sound. I think you will notice it in a small room. I would say the C7 sounds more like the SHL5 than the P3. The P3 is more involving but you will miss the fullness.I ran the Naim Nait 5i2 and Harbeth...
What is the future for Proac Speakers ? I own Proac and Harbeth now as well as B&W. I have also owned many other UK speakers including other BBC inspired models.Proac's slogan Perfectly Natural really does summarize their sound. They are more open and cleaner than the classically st...
Rega Bias 2 or Clearaudio Concept V2, MM I don't really like Rega cartridges - they are not very neutral and even my Elyse2 sounded dull and lacking in detail. I own the CA Concept V2MM that came with my CA turntable. It is a very good cartridge. It's only real shortcoming is the very au...
Harbeth SHL5 vs SHL5 PLUS I agree with Chayro. My room is only 10x11 with 8 foot height and the C7 works great. I also own a series of mini monitors that all sounded too lean at low volumes in this room but fine in my larger room. The M30.1 is a derivative of the BBC LS5/9...
Harbeth SHL5 vs SHL5 PLUS I heard the new models at TAVES in Toronto last fall. I don't think the difference is night and day. The newer speaker sounds more transparent to my ears. A cable change might yield a similar magnitude of difference. Say swapping from Cardas Cross... |
