Back to stereo and a minimal function home processor/preamp
For now that’s my plan. 2xOptical to my DAC for PCM stereo (Tivo and Xbox) and give up surround features for a while.  It’s a shame, but none of the existing surround processors really do what I want...except maybe the Classe sigma SSP, but even t...
NAD M50.2
I figures it would be easiest to just update this thread for interested readers on the M50.2. The 2.14.5 update added amazon music and deezer hifi to the services the M50.2 can access.  There has also been additional “metadata” support added.Still...
Suggest an SACD/CD player under $6k
McIntosh MCD500 Or 550. Beautiful looking systems in my opinion and decent/good DAC implementation.
Upgrading digital source device is not easy
With your collection of SACDs, it’s really tough to advise you *not* to get an SACD player. I suppose the question is, do you get a two box or one box solution?Let me recommend this: get a good one box solution. Given the hodgepodge of DSD outputs...
13.1 auro3d
The issue is the SACD playback. If you want to use the processor’s DAC to play SACDs, the only solution I’ve seen is to use DSD over HDMI. This also restricts which player you can use (Oppo, PS3, the Sony XA5400ES). And even then, it’s hard to fin...
How to get the best sound from Apple TV or Roku?
If you have your stereo system by your TV, most TVs will route HDMI audio out via optical to a receiver/DAC.Or, if all you want is airplay, a microRendu is an option.
NAD M50.2
Just a quick note: according to the Nov 28 Stereophile review of the Nad M50.2, DSD support will be made available before the end of the year. Nice!
Can you rip SACD data to a music server/hard drive?
I’ve been using these guys to digitize my SACDs. http://www.goldeneardigital.com
Dedicated Music server vs Mac mini on a Devialet via Ethernet (AIR) connection
Just a couple notes:if your Ethernet DAC is anything like a Merging Technoloies DAC, jitter is not an issue. That’s probably the biggest advantage of Ethernet DACs. The other thing, a 24/192 file uses (I believe) about 2000 kbps (2Mbps).  The chea...
Looking for a music server, sans DAC.
If you don’t care about DSD capability, the NAD M50.2 is a very nice unit. I’ve been playing with one for several weeks.Cd ripper, auto FLAC encoding, mobile and desktop apps (windows), AES/Coax/SPDIF and HDMI output, 2TB drives in RAID setup whic...
Atmos’ killer app? Sounds like, amusingly, headphones
The article talks about a BluRay audio remaster of an REM CD. It has little to nothing to talk about 3D effects.quote: “Dolby Atmos wasn't converting this song into a surround-sound frenzy of "hey, over there!" sound effect placement. This still f...
Atmos’ killer app? Sounds like, amusingly, headphones
I think - and admittedly, I could be wrong - but as in the article, it appears that music *remastered* for Dolby Atmos can take advantage - even in stereo - of how atmos can push different portions of the music to you via different paths. Current ...
Atmos’ killer app? Sounds like, amusingly, headphones
One last nugget: I’m not quite sure how Atmos can generate individual waves with headphones and have them arrive at the same time, and neither does the author. I think we have to assume the headphone experience is using mashed up waves, but again,...
Atmos’ killer app? Sounds like, amusingly, headphones
The author even mentions that the remastered REM recording doesn’t sound 3D. In fact, he says it’s still basically stereo. But the detail and ability to pick out instruments is the real magic with Atmos. Granted, it could be a puff piece, but the ...
Atmos’ killer app? Sounds like, amusingly, headphones
The article author doesn’t particularly focus on the multispeaker part of it. As he notes, there’s nothing special about multispeaker setups. If you *read* the article, he’s blown away by the *music*. Apparently, when done properly, Atmos delivers...
