A pragmatic view of cartridge expenses / many questions
@mijostyn,Thanks for the insight. As a matter of fact, I do have two tonearms, SME Vs. They are mounted on a Transrotor Apollon and I do swap cartridge use between a Benz LPs, Soundsmith Sussaro MKIi and Benz Ruby Z. I just received a Van den Hul ...
A pragmatic view of cartridge expenses / many questions
@chakster “The price often has nothing to do with the quality. After using some overpriced modern cartridges at $3-5k range I am happy to get back to the basics and keep using some NOS samples of the best high-end from the 80s (MM,MI and MC) that ...
A pragmatic view of cartridge expenses / many questions
@edcyn, “By the time it wears down to the point where you have to replace it (barring catastrophe, of course), chances are there'll be something better...and perhaps even cheaper.“Amen. Seems similar to computers nowadays. I guess enjoy it as much...
Should a reference speaker be neutral, or just great sounding?
@tim_p,Ditto!
Should a reference speaker be neutral, or just great sounding?
@erik_squires The last part of your sentence “close to the best of brand can deliver.” But, individually, everyone will have differing thoughts on this.
Unknown wood on B&W 802 series 80
It may have been an attempt by someone to refinish these and ended up looking like what you have now. It looks fresh and not old from the pics that’s why I say that. Have you had a chance to play them yet? How do they sound? For 750 you did alrigh...
Should a reference speaker be neutral, or just great sounding?
When I was younger and read Stereophile and Absolute Sound every month, I often felt that when reviewers either listed their equipment as reference or the device they were reviewing was called reference, it meant several things to me; it was out o...
Lots of bass at walls, lack of bass in center of room/listening position
@smodtactical,I have been down your path many times over the years. Experiment, experiment, and learn from others for sure. So many factors play into getting good bass response, and as others have mentioned, normally, it’s complicated to get even ...
What has been your costliest mistake in this hobby?
Was installing a brand new Benz LP Moving Coil cartridge, my first ever high end cartridge and was wearing a long sleeve shirt, well, you know what happened. I snagged the cartridge tip somehow with my shirt, and after a few expletives, saw what I...
Subwoofer Suggestion
You really need to experiment with sub settings and location. You can first try setting the subs crossover to be about 10-20 Hz higher than the low frequency response of your speakers. This allows for a nice blend of the Bass from the tower speake...
A speaker audio journey over: Classic Audio Loudspeakers T1.5 Reference = End game
@atmasphere Yes, I thought John was enjoying himself when we started ripping through some records. It would be great if we could arrange listening session to compare for sure. Lets coordinate via PM. Spare rooms, large record library, sound equipm...
A speaker audio journey over: Classic Audio Loudspeakers T1.5 Reference = End game
@atmasphere , @cal3713, Thank you for the feedback.  Holy cow! Feedback from Mr. Atmasphere himself. Thank you for your reply, especially coming from an industry stalwart such as you. Your discussions concerning power paradigm theory have always ...
A speaker audio journey over: Classic Audio Loudspeakers T1.5 Reference = End game
@johnk I understand your remark, but really, after all was stated...you have to suggest a nuanced interpretation of end game and mischaracterize, misconstrue, and take out of context a phrase that a reasonable person would understand associated wi...
Azimuth 2020
I still use a MOFI Geodisc. Works pretty good for me on SME V arms. Make minor adjustments and and tweaks if needed afterwards. Rock solid imaging without sibilants.

@raysmtb,“Congrats on your new speakers! It looks like you have an amazing set up. I’m new to this crazy audio world, it’s amazing the money spent on equipment and some of the unique characters that jump in and out of these threads. It was refresh...
