No bass on B&W 800D2 One more obvious check - is there a foam plug in bass reflex port under the speaker? It needs to be removed if you are not using subwoofers.
Magico speakers too clinical and fatiguing? The problem here is that there are too many poor made records. Clean sounding speakers show the defects in the original record and often make it unlistenable. This is what some refer as "too accurate" or "clinical". The solution is - choose what y...
Active Speakers Don't Sound Better ATC uses analogue crossovers, as do Focal and few others. Other school of thought is use of digital crossover implemented in DSP, which gives more flexibility. But DSP has inherent limitation in precision of DAC they use. Common setup even for spe...
The Horror @niskymichael Accuphase and Luxman are two known brands which make FULL FEATURED control amplifiers. If you play vinyl - better get one WITH tone controls and rumble filter. Power amplifiers field is much broader and there you need to choose what...
The Horror Yes, today you will need to spend at least $20K on speakers to get large sound like you heard at the show. You can save a bit if you go with professional speakers from brands like Genelec, PMC, ATC, but have to give up nice furniture style appeara...
Best Full-Function Preamplifier Accuphase was mentioned above. Unfortunately they dropped excellent 2400 series. Thus I recommend to get on used market and purchase their previous model - C-2450 with AD-2900 phono plugin. Currently made C-2300 model is lower range unit, and C-29...
Add External DAC or Upgrade to a New Streamer / DAC? With USB connection DAC uses its own free running clock and requests data from streamer when it needs a new portion. USB connection is asynchronous and does not carry any clock information - only request from receiver (DAC) and response from sende...
Add External DAC or Upgrade to a New Streamer / DAC? I2S is equivalent of SPDIF from clocking perspective and only appropriate when DAC supplies clock signal to streamer. The only audio transport for Ethernet is AES67/Dante. There are not many DACs supporting it on the market and even less number o...
Add External DAC or Upgrade to a New Streamer / DAC? Streamer is a computer and needs to be evaluated as such - mostly by features available in software. DAC is evaluated on quality of a single function it does - digital to analog conversion. Software and features are changing much more often, that ...
My terrible Customer Journey with the Line Magnetic LM-503PA Mono Vacuum Tube Amps Tubes can fail. Power tubes can fry transformer when this happens. We do not know if music was playing while it happens, but generally that sort of failure will cause loud noise in speaker, which is hard to miss even if you are not in the same roo...
Speaker upgrade for classical music Agree 100% on B&W. For room of your size 802 model will be the best. You should be able to find 802D or 802D2 under $8000 on used market.
New Turntable Direction I would suggest to start with cartridge upgrade first. In vinyl playback cartridge is responsible for 70% of sound, phono preamp for 20% and only remaining 10% are dependent on table/arm combination. All this of case when we you are dealing with r...
has anybody else noticed this about flac audio? It is very easy to test this hypothesis - take WAV audio file, compress into FLAC, decompress back to WAV and then compare two WAV files. Other than metadata header, they should match bit to bit.
Best bookshelf loudspeakers under 10,000 for the pair A little more than $10000 (MSRP $12K) will get you Dutch & Dutch 8c, which received a glowing review from Stereophile https://www.stereophile.com/content/dutch-dutch-8c-active-loudspeaker-systemUnless you only interested in casual listening, b...
Buy a $40,000 10 year old amp for $4,000 or new amp for same money? 10 years old amp is not that old yet. Some (like Bryston) would still have another 10 years of manufacturer’s warranty left. Though they would unlikely be sold for 10% of original price. |
