Thumbs up for ultrasonic record cleaning
@slaw Some other thoughts,If you have been using the same tank of water for 5 months without refreshing the chemistry, the 'chemistry' of the Versa-Clean is likely long since exhausted and the tank water may be acidic.  Water at room temp and just...
Thumbs up for ultrasonic record cleaning
@slaw,The activated carbon filter 'may' remove the surfactant that is in the Versa Clean, and that 'could' be the reason for the water clarity.  As far as the cloudy water, that could be the build-up/accumulation of very small (invisible) particle...
Direct Drive vs. Idler Drive vs. Belt drive
@atmasphere,WRT to platter mats, the concept that materials cannot absorb/attenuate vibration is not correct.  Very thin viscoelastic materials can absorb surprising amounts of vibration - the energy is converted to heat.  This article is an excel...
Problem with preamp volume control
RV,Thank-you for the thank-you :).  It was about a month ago when a similar item came up, but that time it was a Bryston amplifier that like the Benchmark had a selectable sensitivity, and the simple flip of a switch yielded similar success.  Enjo...

@chakster,Error noted.  However, the $1150 AUD$ includes a 10% tax that is deleted if selling to US, so the USA$ price drops to about $625, and with $35 express shipping = about $660; hard to argue with that price :).  Not sure if the stylus retip...
Problem with preamp volume control
RV,The Benchmark AHB2 has three different sensitivity (gain) settings - there is a small toggle switch on the back - see your manual pages 8/9 or download https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0321/7609/files/AHB2_Manual_-_Rev_G.pdf?6581480924542235084.
Problem with preamp volume control
@almarg,Unless the inline attenuator adds capacitance, the added resistance 'may not' be that bad for a MM cartridge and could be good, https://www.tnt-audio.com/sorgenti/load_the_magnets_e.html.  But I will defer to your experience with these att...
Problem with preamp volume control
rvpiano,To follow my discussion on vacuum tube gain, for 12AX7 and 5751 tubes see this list, https://www.tubesandmore.com/tech-corner/12ax7-comparison-current-made-tubes.  Otherwise, the recommendation to use Rothwell attenuators is supported  by ...
Problem with preamp volume control
rvpiano,You have a couple choices depending on what else plugs into the preamp, and what amp you are using. The easiest is to reduce the gain on the amplifier IF it has this option, Bryston amps have different amp gain setting, check the amp manual...

@chakster,I would not be so dismissive of VTF as a variable for record and diamond wear.  The advanced profile stylus's such as Micro-Ridge increase the surface area of the stylus to better contact/track the groove.  The hardness of an inclusion f...

@chakster,Where did zyx.com get their data - did they do actual testing?  VDH says his stylus can last 3000-hrs.  But there is a big difference between ZYX and VDH, and that has to do with VTF.  The higher the VTF the more force and the faster the...

A Worthwhile Untrasonic Cleaner
All,If interested, I use a manual cleaning procedure using the VinylStack label protector.  I use Alconox Liquinox in 1 wt% solution to pre-clean using the Record Doctor nylon brush. Then rinse under flowing tap water assisted with the nylon brush...
A Worthwhile Untrasonic Cleaner
sammmmmmy, If you are curious, Kodak Photoflow  is a concentrated wetting agent that is water mixed with a combination of 25-30% propylene glycol (i.e. anti-freeze) that can act as an antibacterial and antifungal agent and 5-10% non-ionic surfacta...
A Worthwhile Untrasonic Cleaner
@sammmmmmmy,Both Tergitol and Triton X-100 non-ionic detergent (which has been used for cleaning vinyl records for decades) material safety data sheets list Poly (ethylene oxide), as a small impurity as part of the surfactants at <3%.  However,...
