Review: Acapella Triolons Speaker
Al, congratulations on your dealership. Even before you became a dealer, you were most helpful and gracious in our exchanges - which tells me that you are a real gentleman. I am sure that most Audiogonners interested in Acapella would benefit from...
Anybody tube rolled 845's?
Thanks for your responses everyone. Jeffreyds, I have tried tube rolling the 300B's in my system using some borrowed valves and it hasn't made as much of a difference as changing the input tubes or the output tubes. For the time being, changing th...
Poll - Active vs. Passive preamp
Active preamp (Cary SLP-05). I have found that impedance matching becomes absolutely critical if you have a passive pre. Also, every system using a passive pre I have heard cannot reproduce big orchestra properly. I max out the volume control and ...
Anybody tube rolled 845's?
Thanks for your responses everyone. People who have been using the Shuguang 845B - have you only compared these to the stock Chinese valves on the Cary, or any others? Nobody tried the KR Audio 845? I've done a search on Audiogon and the only link...
SACD certainly bests CD for me.
SACD beats CD for me, too. I am fortunate that most of my music is available on SACD. It helps to like classical and a tiny smattering of jazz. It also helps that MOST SACD releases are simply mastered better - even the CD layer on SACD's sound be...
Anybody tube rolled 845's?
Thank you for your response, Jaiello. Could you please tell me what the sonic difference was between the stock Chinese valves and the Cetrons?
Melbourne, Australia
Met up again with fatgen last week and rwjp this evening. There must be more Melbourne Audiogonners around!
Why are you here? ...music or equipment
I'm on Audiogon to make new friends! Really, this is must be the best forum on the net for discussing high end audio equipment. Most others aren't high end enough, or have too many extreme skeptics who do not even believe there is a difference bet...
Tannoy Westminster
Unfortunately I cannot answer Ronny's question but I can answer yours, Dazzdax. The Tannoys have what I call "high efficiency dynamics" - which sounds very different to "low efficiency dynamics". The leading edge of transients on the Tannoy is sof...
Cary CD 306 SACD Burn-in time & Power Cable's
Congratulations on your 306 SACD. Your CD player should be well burnt in by now. Do you have the original 306 or the newer, updated "Mk II" version? The newer version has an updated logic board and a new digital section. I had my dealer perform th...
What other hobby or hobbies do you have?
Seems as if a lot of Agonners like photography :) Me too, I shoot with a Canon 5D but I have been thinking of getting that Leica M8. Been eyeing the Leica system for a long time because i'm sick of SLR's. Also like skiing - just got back from a sk...
Wood v. Metal for stands. Is there a clear winner?
Anyone have opinions on granite slabs or carbon fibre shelves? I just purchased two dressed granite slabs. I put both of them under my CD player with a set of Ceraballs in between. Quite an improvement over having the CDP sitting first on glass, a...
How loud are Cary CAD 300 SEI amps?
What speakers are you thinking of pairing them with? I have a pair of CAD-805AE's (50W SET). I just upgraded to the CAD-211AE's, and the difference is substantial.
Best Preamp = No Preamp?
The other main con is that the outboard DAC may not have enough output to drive the power amps. Some DAC's only have the volume control as an afterthought. I heard a system which was substantially improved by the addition of a preamp. Before the p...
what makes a tube sound the way it does?
Bigamp, I think the magical sound comes from the very simple circuit topologies used in tube amps. If you look at a SS amp, there is gain stage after gain stage, lots of feedback loops, all because transistors are very non-linear and require a bit...
