No bias reading, tubes lit up, no sound
Are your new posts isolated from the chassis? Touching anywhere around the positive posts could short the output out. Just a thought? Try putting it back like it was, see if you can get it to work again, then upgrade one piece at a time, so you ca...
Absolute Sound - do we really need another review like this?
Remember back when Stereophile was a small paperback book? And the writers had integrity, and if they thought you could do better they would say so! That has no bearing on the OPPO, but I just don't enjoy reading the major stereo publications anym...
Sellers Beware!!!
I remember a show on TV a while back talking about how Amazon and many other large mail order companies will not do business with many countries in the Far East and South Pacific, due to excessive credit card fraud. Apparently their governments ha...
Best speakers for Pink Floyd?
Dark Side of the Moon is a very creative album, with great sound effects mixed into the music, lots of channel play, i.e. Running from far left to far right. Personally, I was blown away by this album on a pair of Martin Logan Quests, driven by Je...
Pass Labs X2.5 or Krell KAV-280p? WWYD?
Thanks for the link John, that's a good looking intigrated! And you're right, Coda was making Legacy amps for a long time.  I just saw a Krell FBP 300 on eBay that's located right here in Virgina! Substantially more expensive than the Coda, but wo...
Pass Labs X2.5 or Krell KAV-280p? WWYD?
I lost the bid on the Pass Preamp. So, rather than drop back and buy the Krell, I'm following your advice John and saving up for something better. What's waiting a few months in order to buy the last preamp I will ever need? (Ha!) well hopefully i...
I think I've Just Seen Absolute Proof That Audiophiles Are Insanely Gullible
As the old saying goes, "If something seems to be too good to be true, it probably is".  I try to keep that in mind while examining tweak products. And I also have doubt if their explanation has no basis in science. Many products have dubious "own...
Repair my Sony CDP 608 ESD?
It's the CD 306.200, I forget what's different about this particular model, over the other 306's. But I'm very pleased with it. Best digital playback I've had in my system so far! In fact, it has digital in and out on the back, I haven't attempted...
if you had my system and $2,000 budgeted for an upgrade, where would you spend it?
A nice looking outfit you have there. And honest, if it's not doing anything wrong, if nothing is eating at you, I'd say leave it alone. Your analog front end is nice, and yes a tone arm can make sonic improvements. Or maybe just sonic differences...
Pass Labs X2.5 or Krell KAV-280p? WWYD?
Thanks John for your input. I have written a long, 3 paragraph response detailing why I've arrived at my decisions, and spoke about a Pass Labs X1 I'm bidding on today twice!, and twice it has lost it! So, frustrated I'm leaving it at this. Thanks...
Pass Labs X2.5 or Krell KAV-280p? WWYD?
The price of the two preamps I'm looking at are about $1500.  The reviews I've read on either of them are very positive. Of course they cost $4 K new, so, substantial depreciation there. I did look at an Audio Research tubed pre that has all the f...
I think I've Just Seen Absolute Proof That Audiophiles Are Insanely Gullible
The existence of snake oil, and those gullible enough to believe it, are directly related. If no one were gullible enough to buy into it, then there would be no such products. I think I saw the plug strip advertised on The Cable Company's web site...
Pass Labs X2.5 or Krell KAV-280p? WWYD?
I have nothing against tubes per say, but I am spoiled by the features that solid state preamps offer in this price range. Remote control is a "must have" for me personally, balanced outputs, and 5 or 6 inputs, to get a tubed pre that has these fe...
I think I've Just Seen Absolute Proof That Audiophiles Are Insanely Gullible
No one will argue the virtues of a good record clamp or weight. But, how much technology can one cram into a good record weight? There is nothing on earth that could justify the asking price. One could look up a local machinist and have him make y...
Repair my Sony CDP 608 ESD?
I looked at many modern models that play SACD, but seeing I don't own any SACD discs. And frankly, there aren't many titles that I like available in SACD, so, I really didn't see the need for a universal player. Maybe I'm just old school?
