How much do I need to spend to get a preamp that sounds better than no preamp?
Great post, Joe (Trelja). A pleasure to read an uncommonly nuanced, balanced, and well written post about controversial audio matters.Regarding sonic differences between rectifiers of a given type, btw, I believe that what accounts for those diffe...
Absolute top tier DAC for standard res Redbook CD
I can only speculate that maybe the circuits in the Ethernet receiver react differently to slower edge-rates and poor signal integrity. Maybe the setup timing margins are smaller. This might cause the propagated signals to have more jitter. T...

To the OP:  Just to be sure that something simple isn't being overlooked, are you sure that the two speakers are connected with the same polarity, i.e., speaker "+" to the amp's 4 ohm terminal and speaker "-" to the amp's "0" terminal?Best regards...

Hi Mapman,I see the statement you are referring to, which says:Output Regulation:  Approximately 0.2 dB 16 ohm load to open circuit (Damping factor approximately 45)Like most tube amps, the Classic 120 is presumably designed such that the output t...

Almarg how would you reconcile the manual indicating same power into 4 8 and 16 ohm with doubling down power into the same? Tube amps providing multiple output taps typically have the same or similar **maximum** power rating when a 4 ohm load is c...

Mapman, if you download the "manuals" (they’re actually nicely detailed spec sheets) at the following link, for your Contour 1.3 MkII and the OP’s Contour 1.8 MkII, you’ll see that the impedance characteristics of his speakers are much more benign...
Ugraditus is calling....again. Phono stage?
Uberwaltz, a possibility that comes to mind, which could account for the symptoms you’ve noted with both the phono stage and the Oppo, is that the balanced cables are miswired such that their ground pin (pin 1) is interchanged with one of the two ...
Best balanced linestage/preamp for $4000 or less ???
P.S: What is the make and model of the subwoofer?Regards,-- Al
Best balanced linestage/preamp for $4000 or less ???
would finding a preamp with direct coupled outputs solve this issue ? The MP-3 MK3 is designed this way and I see some other preamps heading this way.. The direct coupled output of the MP-3 would have no trouble driving both your amp and a powered...
Best balanced linestage/preamp for $4000 or less ???
I was going to suggest a used Atma-Sphere MP-3, as Charles did, except that I’m pretty certain it only provides a single pair of XLR outputs, and no RCA outputs, at least in its standard configuration. If you can find one that you would want to co...
Can a power cord increase the resolution of an Class D (SMPS) amp by more than 5% ?
Shirley you jest. As Leslie Nielsen said in the movie "Airplane," which I'm sure you've seen, "don't call me Shirley" :-)BTW, I agree with everything in your post.Regards,-- Al

@Buckhorn_Cortez, if you are referring to one of my earlier posts, I did not say that photons travel **through** wire. In fact I said that they don’t, aside from those corresponding to the small amount of energy that may be absorbed by the resista...
We give up perspective to avoid tone controls
An interesting phenomenon I’ve found is that improving the time coherence of a speaker via well implemented DSP (digital signal processing), "time coherence" automatically implying "phase coherence" as well, can eliminate or at least greatly lesse...
Bi-wiring to 4 and 8Ω speakers
Hello DB,Since your amp is rated to work continuously into 2 ohms (with a power rating of 1200 watts for that impedance), I don’t think you’ll have an impedance problem. Looking at Stereophile’s measurements of impedance vs. frequency for the two ...
Current, Amperage
Kalali 5-12-2018The amperes/channel spec is basically meaningless along with most other ampere ratings. +1. Amplifier current ratings are meaningless and should almost always be ignored. For example, as stated above the MC602 is described as being...
