Can DC power surges cause fires?
At the end of the last sentence of my previous post, I should have said "aside possibly from OTL designs, which I would think would also be AC coupled, but by virtue of capacitors instead of transformers."Regards,-- Al
Sub output: Is it the woofer size or the rated RMS
Isn't Q the dude from Star Trek w/ God-like powers? Maybe, but he was also the guy who created James Bond's gadgets. :)Shadorne & Drew -- Thanks! I guess we've established, at the very least, that there's a lot more to it all than just WAF and...
DIY speaker wire: does insulation matter?
Re voltage levels, I had my calculator handy and I did a representative calculation. 200 watts into an 8 ohm speaker corresponds to 40 volts rms (root mean square) or 57 volts peak.Regards,-- Al
Can DC power surges cause fires?
Yes, I didn't think it was a problem with the speaker or cable, because if either of them had a short it would have produced audible symptoms."DC coupled" simply means that there is no capacitor in series between the preamp output stage and the ou...
DIY speaker wire: does insulation matter?
what kind of voltage are speaker wires subject to?You can calculate a reasonably good approximation of that based on the relation P = (E^2)/R. Power (in watts) = Voltage (in volts) squared divided by Resistance (in ohms). So the maximum voltage wou...

Shadorne: ... That would be system Q or damping... An overdamped design would be extremely inefficient (low SPL output at 20 Hz) with a small woofer in a small box .... IMHO, ideal is a super big sealed box with low Q (0.5 or so) and a large woofe...
You're probably listening too loud
Distortion = Fatigue, for sure, and with many rock and other popular recordings distortion is introduced both intentionally and unintentionally. Dynamic range compression would make the fatigue induced by that distortion all the more severe, I wou...
Shure A15AS XLR attenuators.. anyone tried them?
No, but I'm pretty certain they would not work properly for you. They have an input impedance of only 1000 ohms, and are intended for use with low impedance microphones. That would be too severe a load for most audio components.Regards,-- Al

I would put it that the stress caused by repeated intermittent dc surges can be cumulative. It's not that energy is getting stored, just that repeated stress eventually causes some component or components to reach a breaking point. Just as a point...
Can I wire a 2 channel amp to a center channel?
I should have added in my previous post that with some amps, particularly those in the second category I described, you have to use a y-cable or equivalent to get the input signal into both channels.Regards,-- Al
Can I wire a 2 channel amp to a center channel?
More often than not you have to connect the speaker between the positive output terminals of each amplifier channel, and set a switch that is on the amp to mono mode. The switch, and the circuit it controls, cause one channel to be fed an inverted...

Kijanki: Membrane of 18" speaker should be 10.5 times heavier because it should be 3.24 times thicker and the area is 3.24 times larger. That is probably why definition is getting poor (too heavy).Drew_eckhardt: It's entirely about extended freque...
Kenwood KD990 Upgrading
DrPat -- It's important to know the make and hopefully also the model of the phono cartridge that is installed in the arm. As I indicated in your other thread, differences in phono cartridges can overshadow differences between turntable/tonearm co...
Transient Attack and Amp Design
Kijanki -- Gee, that's the same calculator that I used! Playing around with it a little more, it looks like I must have set the units to mm instead of inches, to get the 15nH or so, although I thought I checked myself pretty carefully on that. In ...
Ear Protection
What?Only kidding:) I use good quality hearing protectors whenever I use noisy power equipment (lawnmower, leafblower, snowthrower), but not otherwise. Besides the potential long-term impact on hearing, I can sense that exposure to that kind of no...
