What will be the data storage method of the future
06-01-11: Bob_reynoldsI've often wondered why cost effective RAID systems haven't become the norm for home PCs. It seems that hard drives are quite reliable these days. I can't recall the last failure I've had at either work or home. And the cost ...

06-01-11: Bob_reynoldsWhat's the fundamental difference between compact flash, USB flash, SD cards, and solid state drives?Hi Bob,While there are a number of fundamental differences between flash memory technologies that have been and are being us...
Lightspeed Attenuator - Best Preamp Ever?
05-31-11: Georgelofi... Keep interconnects as short as possible (even if it means reconfiguring the system) and to get ones that have low capacitance less than 100pf per foot.George, is that what you really meant to say? I would not consider inter...

05-30-11: RushtonWonderful records, Al!The Vivaldi is a Peter McGrath (recording engineer) marvel. Thanks, Rushton. Yes, they are wonderful indeed! I'm gradually working my way through the best sounding recordings in my collection that I haven't li...
Sub woofer cable help please...
I am not aware of any off-the-shelf resistor y-adapters. Creating one yourself probably wouldn't be too difficult. However, a lot more information, and some analysis, would be necessary to choose a suitable resistor value (even if off-the-shelf re...

Sub woofer cable help please...
Good comments above. I would add, though, that IMO even if the two sets of preamp outputs are separately buffered it would still not be good practice to sum the two channels together for the sub with a y-adapter. In saying so, I recognize that man...

Long XLR's: PAD Venustas versus Mogami
Hi Floyd,Driving the long cable from the PARC will make the output impedance of the preamp irrelevant. The only situation in which the output impedance of the component preceding the component driving the cable would matter (as far as that cable i...
Long XLR's: PAD Venustas versus Mogami
I'll add to my previous post that a very experienced audiophile I know uses 30 feet of Oyaide PA-02 in a balanced configuration, with excellent results. It has much lower capacitance than the Mogami 2534. He has compared those two cables, and as m...
Long XLR's: PAD Venustas versus Mogami
What components are you connecting? If the connection is between your BAT Rex preamp and the power amp, and the existing cable is Mogami 2534 in a balanced quad configuration, the cable's capacitance is high enough to be causing a small but probab...
4-ohm setting with 8 ohm speakers
A linear impedance is not necessarily a constant impedance. For instance, a speaker having an impedance of 2 ohms at 20Hz, and 20 ohms at 20kHz, could still be described as having a linear impedance, if a plot of that variation approximated a stra...

05-28-11: Tom6897If you want to store your personal data/music/photos/medical and financial currently it looks as if Solid State Drives (SSD) will soon replace common IDE/SATA Drives as the preferred method of local storage. (prices are dropping a...
