What's the deal with idler turntables and do they have a place in modern HiFi? The "problem" with this hobby is that there are frequent instances where we have phenomenon A associated with physical fact B, and the natural human response to such coincidences is to ascribe A to B. But we almost never have good scientific exper...
Volume Control setting corresponds to how many db down (-db) from 0db at full volume? Bombaywalla, yes, that will work provided the meter has adequate speed and bandwidth. And in fact about 35 years ago I had a Radio Shack audio power meter which worked in exactly that manner. But the larger question I would raise about all of this...
Bi-amping Rules Pani, to be sure it's clear, my comment that you quoted was not intended to imply anything inconsistent with your comments. And personally I am in essential agreement with everything you have said above. From my post in this thread dated 7-25-20...
Volume Control setting corresponds to how many db down (-db) from 0db at full volume? I’m thinking out loud here & if i end up writing gibberish please excuse me.... Even if you know this you don’t know the transfer function of the power amp i.e. what input amplitude corresponds to what output power. It’s not linear; it’s most ...
Loudspeakers have we really made that much progress since the 1930s? Thanks, Tim. Your insights into speaker design are always constructive and informative.Best regards,-- Al
Bi-amping Rules A couple of comments and clarifications regarding today’s posts in this thread:In the case of passive biamping, i.e., biamping without an electronic crossover "ahead" of the power amps, it is of course correct that what has to be matched in some m...
Loudspeakers have we really made that much progress since the 1930s? Pick something to measure about a speaker and then do it. MEASURE the response to the step function and improve it.The voicing is a deviation from this.Just think of it - the process of engineering! A violin is way different. As I mentioned earlie...
REL high-level connection and McIntosh Autoformers nmmusicman 8-15-2016 1:10 pm edtThere is no cause for concern. I have a REL Stadium lll connected to a MC275 Mk V utilizing the high level connection with no issues whatsoever. I agree with the cautions expressed by Daveyf, although I believe the ...
Do they make a quiet great sounding phono pre amp?? I was able to place two 3to2 adapters on all components EXCEPT the main amplifier, I think by doing this the system is now funneling the grounds down to the one outlet, and now its quiet as a mouse!! Matt, correct me if I'm wrong but I believ...
Synergistic Red Fuse ... Lowrider, it looks like the MDA-10 may have been superseded by the MDA-10-R, which is very similar except that it is lead-free and complies with the European RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) requirements. As you may have noticed at the li...
Synergistic Red Fuse ... Yes, David, as you no doubt realize Carver's 1970s Phase Linear Corporation has often been referred to as "Flame Linear." But believe it or not the Carver Corporation M400t I mentioned that I purchased around 1982 is still going strong in the hom...
Synergistic Red Fuse ... Lowrider & David, thanks for the additional comments. Lowrider, yes, in the rear panel photos of the amp that I’ve looked at via Google Images it says "120VAC 50/60 Hz" immediately under the fuseholder, as you indicated. But further down and a...
Synergistic Red Fuse ... Also, of course, a mains fuse would not be rated at 32 volts. P.S: Unless perhaps a previous owner replaced the original fuse with a 32 volt automotive fuse, which might also explain why the fuse that was in there was a fast blow, rather than a sl...
Synergistic Red Fuse ... Lowrider, is the amp a Sunfire 300, as I was recalling? And does it say "MDA-10" for the mains fuse on the rear panel? Also, of course, a mains fuse would not be rated at 32 volts.Best regards,-- Al
Synergistic Red Fuse ... What is the value of the amp fuse? David, the photo I looked at of the rear panel of the Sunfire 300 amp indicates that the mains fuse is a type MDA-10, which I'm pretty certain is a 10 amp 250 volt 6.3 x 32 mm slow blow fuse.Regards,-- Al |
