Audio Research LS 25 MkII compared to actual AR production ?
Johnny is right, as usual.  Just about every ARC line stage and preamp for which I've seen specs, including the LS25 MkII and the other ARC models that have been mentioned, has a **minimum** load recommendation of 20K, and the input impedance of y...
Doubling a Set of Speaker Cables
Vicweast, I have no experience with the Zero autoformers. As you no doubt realize, their main purpose is to increase the load impedance seen by an amp, in situations where the impedance of the speaker itself would be too low to be optimal with the...
Doubling a Set of Speaker Cables
Hi Hal,The author of the review you linked to often posts here, as member Douglas_Schroeder, and I recall that he has made the same point in threads here in the past. He has experience with a particularly wide range of speakers and cables, and he ...
Vocals and upper midrange too forward?
One more point about trying the 4 ohm taps.  It can be expected that you'll have to turn the volume control up a bit higher than you would when using the 8 ohm taps, to achieve the same volume.  If the volume control is considered as if it were th...
Vocals and upper midrange too forward?
While the Gibbon 88 is nominally specified as an 8 ohm speaker, if you already haven’t I would strongly suggest trying them with the 4 ohm output taps of your amp. For a couple of reasons:1)The 4 ohm tap will have a significantly lower output impe...
If I'm looking for "Tube Sound", why would I put a Tube Pre in front of a SS amp?
Inna 9-28-2016Atmashere, Nelson Pass and John Curl are not the best SS designers in the world. You forgot Rasmussen of Gryphon and also some other European designers. Besides, Vladimir Shushurin of Lamm makes hybrid power amps that are in essense ...
Please Recommend Audiophile Solo Piano Recordings
The following two recordings are out of print, but may be findable.  The major work on each is Chopin's wonderful Piano Sonata No. 3, Op. 58: "Chopin," pianist Edward Auer, RCA Japan RDCE-7 (direct-to-disc LP). "Music of Chopin," pianist Hyperion...
Reliabilty, Keeping Equipment Powered on or off?
As Gdhal indicated this question has been discussed in a number of past threads, with lots of opinions being expressed but without much in the way of consensus being reached.  IMO all that can be said with confidence is that it depends on the spec...
Coincident phono stage - cartridge compatibility (EMT)?
The phono stage is indicated as having an overall gain of 66 db and a maximum output capability of 30 volts.  66 db corresponds to a voltage gain of 2000x, which would seem to say that the phono stage can handle an input voltage of 30/2000 = 15 mv...
Would increasing the gain in the amp give more weight to the sound? Any negatives?
According to John Atkinson's measurements in Stereophile the PH-1 has an output impedance of "220 ohms at all frequencies."  The review also indicates that the circuit "appears to be based on Burr-Brown OPA2134 op-amp chips."  A quick look at the ...
Would increasing the gain in the amp give more weight to the sound? Any negatives?
The Goldring 1042 has a recommended load capacitance of 150 to 200 pf. Unless you are using a phono cable having particularly low capacitance, I would guess that the 1.5 meter cable probably has a capacitance in the area of 150 or perhaps even 200...
Would increasing the gain in the amp give more weight to the sound? Any negatives?
What cartridge are you using? And how long is your phono cable? The reason I ask is that the relatively high 200 pf input capacitance of your phono stage, in combination with the capacitance of your phono cable (which is proportional to length as w...
Loudspeakers have we really made that much progress since the 1930s?
What is meant by ’the best vintage speakers’? old Quads? Hartsfields? AR-1s? The article is somewhat general in its references, but emphasizes field coil drivers in particular. It also states:The people who designed the classic products sold by We...
HELP*%# How many DAC's does it take to screw in a decent output signal???
A DAC (digital-to-analog converter) converts digital signals to analog signals, as its name implies. So it is never possible to have two DACs in series unless there is an ADC (analog-to-digital converter) somewhere in between them. And most home a...
When will there be decent classical music recordings?
I agree that a larger room may be helpful to the OP, but not for the reasons that seem to be implied in the recent posts.  The OP is looking for more detail than most classical recordings provide, corresponding to a very close-up perspective on th...
