Is using a X.1 AV receiver just for stereo bad?
It is not bad if you like the sound. I used my Anthem 7.1 HT receiver for 2 channel for a few months before buying a dedicated pre.
Class D amps, bang for your buck ones
Spectrons are not bang for the buck, they are one of the expense D Class amps. Check out the older Bel Cantos or wyred 4 sound.
looking for a good bass tube preamp
Toebi yes with a 47k input imp u can go 4700 ohms output imp worst case on the pre. The lower the output imp on the pre the better.
Cary 120s
LOL Jdec, u know how to push the buttons don't u.Truth be told, I have been thinking about it. Cary 120s with the Pope 6sn7gt sounded really good. Yep, I probably would. Folks always look at the number of 120s on sale as a negative thing, but that...
Cary 120s
Dav65mus, for what it is worth, I sold my Cary 120s and bought a Canary 160. I paid almost double the price for the Canary. The Cary IMO sounds way better than the Canary.
Best Amp with Magnepan 3.6's
MacDad, Please sell me your Cary CAD 500MB LOL. I would not let go either. These have become like a rare commodity. I have been looking for a 2nd pair for weeks now and nope. Enjoy.

High Current SS amps with input impedance = 200K
Interesting reading. Several of us made this mistake when starting. This is an excellent lessons learned for new audiophiles. Why don't A'gon create a lessons learned folder entitled "Audiophile 101". I learnt the expensive way.

Cary 120s
Brf,I do agree that the stock tubes are really poor, but once you upgrade these it takes the amp to a whole new level. This actually explans why you have a number of them listed for sale. Of course these upgraded tubes do not come cheap so folk ei...
Cary 120s
I to have the 120s and the CAD 500MB. I actually bought two 120s to bi-amp, but it did not work out. With the right tubes, this amp can kick some serious azz. Mine has the pope 6sn7 and the tung-sol. The 120s does not get hot.
Build Your Own?
Djn04, thats an interesting design. I bet it sounds good. I built a replica of this: http://www.humblehomemadehifi.com/Andromeda%20Mk-II.html
How do you determine how much to spend on speakers
What ever the wife says.
Build Your Own?
The easiest thing to build is to replicate a proven existing design offered by folk like Tony Gees or others. Coming up with you own design is a whole new ball game and headache.
