best turntable under $5k
My vote is for the VPI Aries Black Knight with arm (2800). Add in a used Acoustic Research PH-3 phono stage (800). We have 3600. Use the rest on the best ZYX cart Merhan can sell you (www.sorasound.com).Marty Nickison

You can get a quality rig for low dollars if you just take your time. First, do some reading. Buy some used Stereophiles and The Absoulute Sounds. Read-up on this forum, Audio Asylum, Soundstage's Vinyl Column, and high-endaudio.com. Take your tim...
Rega Fix
Hello fellow addicts :-) I wanted to post some other Rega fixes. I used to own a P2, P2 with Rb-600 (an amazing combination, strangely), and a full P25. The first fix requires a good pair of sissors (I used a Leatherman) and some black electrical...
"The Ground" by Tord Gustavsen Trio. Anyone heard?
Jfx, Always Let Me Go is available online. If you go to allofmp3, you can give them $10 and download the whole thing as 384k files and burn them yourself with Exact Audio Copy. You save (they will only deduct $4 from the $10 and you can get more),...
sexiest sounding female vocalists?
For me, no one can grab me like Sassy (Sarah Vaughn). Her vocality is elegant, but not overefined. Her enunciation is clear, but 100 percent melodic. Her tonality is clean with no excessive vibrato or other vocal techniques. Sarah is pure song to ...
"The Ground" by Tord Gustavsen Trio. Anyone heard?
I'm shocked no one has mentioned Suspended Night by Tomasz Stanko (with the trio mentioned above). Very easy to follow with lots of Impressionistic (eg, Bill Evans) scale and mode changes added to it.I'll also recommend the new keith Jarrett solo ...
Turntables: Vintage Marantz 6300 vs New NAD 533?
I would go for the NAD533. It's a Rega 2 with a wood platter and sounds great to my ears. I also will say that a Technics 1200 is not a bad table, either. This table is not made for 'merticulous' audiophiles but 'hard-spinning' DJ and Turntablists...
Most achingly-beautiful music
Hello, I love this thread. However, all I ever listen to is achingly-beautiful music. So, I'm going to list 12 but from a vast array of music types.1. Bartok--Piano Concerto in F (#2). Gena Anda/DG or the Janodo/Naxos verions. Listen to the 2nd mo...
Can I install a new arm on this old table?
Reeds, Goto www.britaudio.com and get a Incognito Easy VTA Riser. They run about $50 shipped and will allow you to adjust VTA. I got one for my Moth Alamo (P2) and still use it (although I did 'cut' it a bit smaller) on my VPI. Cheaper than spendi...
VPI table, cart and phonostage? - Novice.
FWIW, I have a old tested and true table/cart combo. I have a Hw 19 Mk IV with an RB-250 and a Denon 301 Mk. IV cart. You can find all this for about $1,000 (hw 19's are discontinued). Nice sound and a bit cheaper than the Scout. If you are lookin...

Why don't kids nowadays know about Jazz and classi
Everyone, I feel so drawn in to this topic and my post will be 'winded. You have been warned. As a child, my home was veried on thier music habits. My mother loved R&B (a part of my heart goes to the late Luther Vandross....what a musician). He...
Cleveland, OH
Hello, I live in Youngstown, Ohio and have been into audio for about 10 years now (time flies). I would also be interesting in joining an 'asylum'.Marty
Best method and software to convert vinyl to cd
MCWEBB, I take my albums and make CD's of them. I love the bargins in jazz and classical on lp versus CD. Also, you can find recordings of obsure jazz that Cd's have not 'repressed' yet. As for software, I approach it as if I was taping an Lp. All...
