New Processor
FWIW, here's my ranking on sonic and build quality respectively: 1. SP1.7 2. Classe 3. Krell Have heard them all and find the Krell still having that distinctive sound that I don't like (a tad bright to my ears; YMMV). Classe is very nice but bla...
HDCD CD's
Herve1 -Have you looked at Reference Recordings' catalogue? While it is not as extensive as the big labels, every offering is a sonic gem. (They were engineered by Keith Johnson of Spectral fame, and most of the releases are in HDCD.) There isn't ...
Krell Showcase or Bryston SP 1.7
Another vote for the SP1.7. Will "upgrade" my SP1 to it should I ever opt for the multi-channel audio. The SP1 and 1.7 are great pieces of audio engineering and value.
Which Integrated?
Another vote for the Sim i-3. Greatly underrated company with superb products. (The problem is that they have a limited chain of distribution, so auditions are not easy to conduct unless you're willing to do some driving.) Beautifully built stuff ...
Should I replace my Marantz SR880 MkII receiver?
I've heard the Rotel pre/pros and they are hard to beat for the money. I'm not aware of any receiver that has a preamp stage that's anything beyond pedestrian. In any case, I'm fairly sure the Marantz isn't doing justice to that Rotel amp. If it w...
Bryston amps VS the rest... too clear and neutral?
Find myself once again agreeing with Karls. Audition one of the Brystons and ignore what we're all saying. You may love it, you may hate it. I used to have a bias against their stuff, but that changed dramatically with the intro of the ST series -...
Attention: Dunlavy Audio Labs out of business
Why do you want to return these speakers? Have they suddenly begun sounding bad? Doubtful. You can get aftermarket replacements should they be needed, and keep in mind that unless you abuse the blazes out of speakers, they tend to last a long time...
McIntosh, Bryston, Proceed or krell
I second Damon's suggestion. Disclaimer: I own the SP1 and have been extremely happy with it. But remember, your ears are the final arbiter.Ciao
neutrality vs. realism
Thsalmon -I think your concluding sentence summed it well!! I've long since wearied of these endless wars about neutrality, tubes, SS and whose product(s) most closely approximate reality. You pick your poison and live with it. If a Marantz receiv...
REL subs--Strata III or Storm III ??
I also use the Storm III with ML speakers - a great match! You would be hard pressed to do better w/o spending a lotmore money.
Bryston BP-25 or Musical Fidelity A3 CR
Ditto to both posts. I used a BP25 for a few years and hadno complaints of any consequence. In fact, one of the reasons I got an SP-1 pre/pro is to keep the great analogsound of the BP25. Highly recommended!
Better magazine, Stereophile or Absolute Sound
I'm suspicious of ANY commercial rag - they do indeed have to cater to their advertisers. (John Atkinson in a recent issue wrote some rather convoluted apologia for this approach.) You may want to puzzle out what he said. I found it tiresome. With ...
Shure V15V cartridge. Worth investing in?
To answer your question first: no, I would not rehab your old Shure; I would get a new one, as it is significantly better. Also note that the damping block tends to lose its elasticity, and that usually imparts a hardness to the sound. So even if ...
turntable madness
Kt 88,I give a strong vote for Thorens. Very well made, sound great, etc. HOWEVER, proper setup of the arm, cartridge, VTA, anti-skate, etc. are things best done by a dealer who knows what he's about and has the tools and experience to do it right...
Martin Logan Prodigy A speaker for goosebumps
Your lengthy note about the Prodigys reminds me of the time I first heard them at the local dealer. I too was thrilled at the sound and so commented. The rep, who has a very discerning ear, then proceeded to tell me how he wanted to throw them out...
