The passing of Shirley Horn - Jazz Legend

It is indeed with heavy heart that I am reporting the passing of Shirley Horn on Thursday night at the age of 71.

She was a true original. God rest her soul.

I shed a tear this morning after listening to the first few cuts on "The Main Ingredient", an album that Shirley recorded in her D.C. home in 1996. A great mix of some of jazz's old cats and young lions, like the late Joe Henderson, Elvin Jones, Roy Hargrove, etc., jammin late at night and just enjoying making music. Shirley says: "This album is called The Main Ingredient because, for me, the main ingredient is the music". Amen sister.

Shirley was another artist that was "discovered" by Miles Davis, who then helped her become a mainstay on the jazz scene.

We continue to lose the great old jazz icons, thankfully we can still have their artistry around to enjoy and to warm our hearts.

Shirley Horn, rest In peace sweetheart.

Thanks Shirley, you will be missed.
You Won't Forget Me was a very appropriate title that she performed.

She certainly won't be forgotten.
I am going to have a tribute night to a Jazz Master, she has a voice that is all one can ask for.My friend has all her Verve records and they sound fantastic!! In some ways singers are like artists, they are appreciated even more when they are gone. God speed Ms Horn
Let's don't forget her incredible piano artistry, right up there near the top with Ellington, Brubeck, McCoy Tyner, and Monk, etc. Just like her singing, the timing and inflections are amazing, chock full of soul. The real thing.
