Why not just go with an HT receiver versus a preamp + amp situation? Especially if winding up with multi ch is a concern?

you can get a lot of HT receiver for $500. I don't know if I can say the same for that price going with seperates.
amc makes a perfectly serviceable, bridgeable 2 channel ss amp which is generally available for $200 or so on ebay. i also see a bunch of used b&k st140 in that range. i'd also look at marantz ma monoblocks, which you should also find used within your budget. for a cheap preamp, adcom gtp or b&k are good products.
Adcom would be my first choice. But NAD, B&K, and even Rotel can be worht a look as well. Older Carver's often's have issues and I would avoid them. Good luck.
There is a very nice Cambridge 540R v2 6.1 receiver for sale here for $220. I have the 1st version and it has a very nice warm sound and great as a HT too.
