RIP: Daddio of the Raddio

A legendary disc jockey and a pioneer in the history of radio (not to mention race relations), he was responsible for promoting the music of black artists (particularly R&B) through AM radio airplay when no one else would.

An institution in Pittsburgh and a national treasure, Porky Chedwick, the “Daddio of the Raddio” died yesterday at age 96.

As a white kid who grew up in the 50s and 60s in a racially segregated Pittsburgh suburb that was more than a little racist, I can remember what a shocker – and bubble burster – it was when I first learned that Porky was white!
