"NO DISC" error on cd player

Hello,

I have an older KAVENT CD 731 CD player (with HDCD chip) that is on the old side, but has not had much use and is in mint condition.  It lives in a climate controlled environment. I am having a unique problem.  I will put in a Redbook cd, load the tray, then I get the "no disc" error.  Same thing after 3 attempts.  Then, just for laughs, I inserted a cd that has the HDCD encoding, and darned if the thing seats just fine and plays just fine.  THEN, when I remove the encoded CD and put back in the Redbook CD, it plays!!!  Does something need to be cleaned inside that I could do with a q-tip and some cleaner?  Or should I find someone who can service it?  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks!

"NO DISC" usually means a dead laser. My Marantz CD67 has started doing this! It is 25 years old. I will have to buy and install a working laser pickup. These have a life span of several thousand hours.

I think you are on the wrong post, robert6385, unless jason or tom is also named "mihha".

Many times the laser pickup can be saved by turning the adjustment screw on it a quarter of a turn. Search online about this, it's a PITA but does work.
