Your analog ears?

A while back I read a clearly Doctor level post on exactly how we start to hear.  He explained a very digital behavior at the root of our perception.  I found this paper from the University of Wisconsin Neuroscience Dept.  What caught my eye initially was reference to GRADED analog response to sound stimulus.  You can learn as much in these 13 pages as you can absorb.  Fascinating stuff .
