Would a Bel Canto DAC2 do the trick?

I'm trying to find an inexpensive (under $1K) digital front end for GMA 1.5 speakers and a Rogue Tempest Magnum integrated amp. I'll probably upgrade in the future, but for now, I'm trying to go as inexpensive as possible. I like smooth, detailed sound, with good pace, slam and bass. I listen to jazz, heavy metal, rock, funk, trip-hop, electronic.... I currently have a Toshiba DVD player, and was wondering if running it through a DAC would do the trick. Two possible options I've considered are the Bel Canto DAC2 or the Theta Basic IIIa. Would I need a separate transport? I'd appreciate the input. Thanks.

Hi Michael,

Can you describe the differences you perceived between the Bel Canto DAC2 and the Musical Fidelity A3 24? I was interested in the DAC2 because I read that it works fine with DVD players as a transport... I figured I could upgrade to a better transport later. I currently don't own any SACDs, but I'm quite apprehensive about it... I don't know if this standard will survive long term.

Also, do you know if the transports you mention support CDR?

Anyway, thanks for the advice!
