Why Don’t You Post Your System on Your Profile?

Many of you ask others to advise you, but the answer to so many questions is system dependent.  Why don’t you post your system on your profile prior to requesting help?

I’m not on here all that much anyhow.

That was post 1881 since 2018. That’s a lot of contributing to this forum, but you do seem a bit frustrated.

Personally, I don’t expect much and my expectations are usually exceeded. I agree many people coming from different places and I would say that the Internet encourages less civil conversation. That said, most members are civil and try to contribute, but to me, posting your system before asking, or answering a question is part of contributing and being civil.

@mahgister

Many of us spent years working hard and making the most of what resources we had.  Some with 500K+ systems probably have had to drive old subcompact cars at one time and had to do what they could to listen to recorded music.  Others run large companies and like the challenge of putting together a great system at a lower price point.  All of the systems are a challenge.

@garebear

Based on your security concerns, I’m assuming that a member’s address is stored on Audigon servers should they buy, or sell.

I don’t believe that such information is stored for those that only use the forum. So, for these members there shouldn’t be any security concerns unless they post something that gives away their address. Is this a correct understanding?

The only other possible way to locate a member would be geo data on uploaded photos, but I question if this information can be determined via the virtual system photos and such data can be stripped from photo prior to uploading.  Again, I don’t know if this is a correct understanding.

@kota1

Funny..but true.

My teenage daughters use the same strategies.  It might be helpful for those that can’t figure things out to use a device with a large screen and follow the instructions given on the first page of this thread.

For those that don’t post their system, on occasion, do you view other member’s system when answering a question?

I frequently view the Ops system.  It provides me with some idea of the pond in which a particular component lives.  I also post because I think that it can provide a better context when I ask an equipment question.  One lingering question in my mind is how does my choice of McIntosh enhance, or detracts from what I hear, so I pay attention to what equipment other equipment is paired with McIntosh amp/preamps.  I also consider my use of room treatment to be in a learning part of the curve.  One of my system photos shows an elaborate number of absorbers resting on the floor, but the truth is that my wife will kill me if I put some of our photos on the walls without consulting her and most are in storage, so as I pull from storage, I am storing them in my two channel room.  So far, my initial effort has been trying to tame the low frequencies so that I don’t put energy into my turntable.

So, I frequently look at the Ops system.  It is really unfortunate when such a posting is used as a basis for criticizing someone for their system vs trying to add value.  Those sort of people, and they are everywhere, are to be ignored.

@buckhorn_cortez

Somehow, you think that by knowing my current equipment suite tells you the sum of my experience?   What a joke.

I can’t imagine why someone would be vested in understanding the”sum of my (your) experience”.

@flyfish77

I am an avid fly fisher, and lots of people that enjoy that sport are crazy about expensive gear. In my opinion, audiophiles are far crazier about gear than people who fly fish. Fly Fishing on-line forums, however, do not have special sections on these forums for listing all of the crazy expensive gear that they have. Just saying.

Have you also noticed that members mentor others with equal attention regardless of how expensive their personal gear might be?  Very few were gifted at birth the ability to purchase expensive gear. Most spent a good part of their lives living within a limited budget, but this hobby seems to attract older people and some, when retired, treat themselves to items that they couldn’t afford while supporting a family. Most remember the challenges of building systems at various price points.

I think that we can all agree that this forum is a mess from a UI standpoint, but we are getting what we pay for.

I don't want to be robbed.

Now the bad guys know that you are a good target.  Best be safe and delete your post.

@emergingsoul

Your idea counters what I value.  I value posting systems in reference to questions and advice given.  I don’t want there to be an elite and I don’t care to see your stable of cars.  I posted this question because I had thought that many were intimidated by the high value systems.  I was hoping that this thread would help people to understand the value of posting their system and encourage members to look to the educational and communication value of posting vs looking at this as who has bragging rights.  Someone on this board is the wealthiest and someone is the poorest and I don’t care who these folks might be.

@mc1969

It is archaic, but posting your system does not require the webmaster’s help and if you need help, see first page of this thread.

@jjss49

Some incredible equipment and I envy the size of your room..but for 16+ years my wife didn’t want me to setup an audio room as per my previous house. We recently move to another state and she didn’t move until after the house had been completed plus eight months..just enough time to cobble together my system from nothing. She resists entering, but did sit down for a few minutes to listen to some streamed music. She said that it sounded good, but I should get rid of the turntable if I don’t need it and I should get rid of all the wires. I didn’t quite know what to say. I don’t really need most of the things that I have, but the wires are kind of important.

Previously, some posted that they did not post their system because they feared that this might result in security issues.

As of this morning I was required to enter my phone number and address to continue posting.  This must be part of an ongoing effort to limit trolls from posting.  I don’t know how securely this information is stored, but it does open the possibility that your address could be revealed through someone hacking this site.  That said, I suspect that anyone that has valuables realizes that cameras, fencing, security doors, big dogs and things that go bang go a long way towards protecting you and your family.  Of course, insurance helps after the fact, but home invasion when residence are home have a high chance of someone getting hurt..and it isn’t the bad guy.

The last thing some idiot is gonna do on a home break in is grab a heavy piece of hi-fi gear.

Plus I now live in Texas. I'll say no more. :)

True and +1 for Texas

So far we have:

1. Don’t want to

2. Can’t figure out how to

3. But if I post, bad guys will steal my system

4. Room is a mess

5. I’m lazy

Did I forget any other responses?

@bolong

Your concern seems to me to be a difficult way for thieves to target wealthy individuals. Will they fly, or drive to your area? They will require some real muscle to move a system. Why not just use google maps, or Zillow to locate areas with large estates and find a house with a ten car garage. Oh, let’s make it someplace local, so that they don’t need a plane ticket and have local connections to dump the stolen goods.

Honestly, someone that can hack this site will go after someone in the digital domain. Make sure that you don’t use the internet for any transactions and keep your money under your pillow.

It seems that this thread has greatly degenerated over the last few pages of posts.  I was hoping to encourage members to post their system.  I continue to believe that your system might provide some perspective and vital information when asking for advice and offer some pointers to those asking for help.  Thanks for contributing your perspectives.

@bolong

Let’s just suggest that your posts on this thread are just a prank.  You certainly don’t want to avoid posting your system on one hand and then suggest it is because your system is so very valuable.

You don’t have to be paranoid to use insurance.  I always lock my doors and am careful as to who I associate with, so being careful is just being prudent/responsible.

@jpan

Beautiful system and room.  Love the way you acoustically handled the large windows.
