Dare I say , that there is more great Pop Rock bands now than in any era ? I guess I said it. My tastes haved moved from straight ahead Rock n Roll back in highschool to Pop Rock, Folk, Alt. County, Blue Grass, Americana By Pop Rock, I don't mean Adam Lambert , I listen to progressive , innovative (even if reinterpreting styles/genres) intelligent Pop Rock. The Shins, Vampire Weekend, Broken Bells, The XX, Ben Howard, Wilco, The Wood Brothers, The National, My Morning Jacket, Gomez, Grizzly Bear,Spiritualized, newly discovered bands such as Alt J, Jim James, Here We Go Magic and more! What a dynamic and exciting time to be a music lover!!!! I grew up listening to one of three stations playing Rock music in Philadelphia. I listened to what they played . Now the world of music us at our finger tips!! The Internet , social networking, Spotify , MOG , YouTube , Rapsody, Sirrus , Cable music , etc... It's easy in this day and age to discover new music. All you need is time and an open mind. I get disheartened to hear audiophiles say that music is shit, dead , over. My initial reaction is , I pity these close minded foolish people who do not embrace all the wonderful music released in the past 30 years and today. You invested thousands of dollars in amazing systems to listen to Bowie and the Beatles and Queen and Rush over and over again ? Really ? I say ,"Open Your Minds" Discover great new music, it's out there. |
Orpheus , maybe you should look at your own reflection. Life doesn't suck. Your attitude does. Sure there pain, war, disease , evil. (things that suck) But so too is there beauty and love everywhere if you are open to experiencing it. I love life!!, because I choose to. I discover fantastic new music because I take the time to explore it. I look forward to the future and embrace life everyday. Todd |
Frogman and Goose, I'm happy to help recommend some fantastic Pop music from the past few years. Stay tuned . |
Great point Mapman!! That said, I still want to compile some music that I deem great and may lead to discoveries to some fellow audiophiles. We spoon feed each other music suggestions all the time in numerous threads. Many of the bands/albums that have given me so much musical pleasure the past 5 years I have found right here from fellow audiophiles. I have near zero hope that Orpheus or Frog will like, or even consider my suggestions. I plan to start a seperate thread as not to derail this fine thread. ( I will link it here for those interested) |
Orpheus10 , try to leave sociology, politics, and economics out of the equation. I am finding new great music all the time . Great composing, song writing, singing etc. As I said, I am getting a list together of fantastic bands/albums together. It's taking me a while as I have so many. Of course this is my taste in music, and what I see as fantastic musicianship. But I have great taste! ;-) I also put in a lot of time to discovering new music. |
Cool Frogman, I am sorry for the negative comment. There are a few folks on here who seem jaded and disingenuous toward excepting great new music . As a music lover, that bums me out. I listen to mostly Alt. Pop/ Folk/ rock, with a lot of Alt. Country and Americana, and I am finding new music that thrills me every day!! I really enjoy male singer song writers! I recently found an amazing artist through a fellow right here on Agon. Nglazer I think. His name is Ben Howard. The album is Every Kingdom. Sit back and listen to this man's genius. The album is complete, meaning its fantastic from the first to last song.On Spotify, there were 6 tracks added to the album, and another EP called Burg Island . All of it is great. In my eyes he is one of the greatest singer song writers today. The few pro videos I have seen on YouTube were stunning as well. Enjoy, I hope... |
Rja, and y'all , if ten percent of the groups out there are good or great that would mean there are thousands of good to great bands/ albums to discover. I'm way happy with all the fantastic music being produced today. There are even bands that I like much better than the Beatles and the Stones. |
Cool Frogman, there is only one Led Zeppelin !! I listened to Zep almost exclusively my entire senior year in high school. I actually saw Jimmy Page play in the band The Firm. So you want something that will get your blood pumping , something more visceral. Try the Raconteurs , album is Broken Boy Soldiers. Jack White is the lead singer in this band. This album is complete and kick ass!! I also love Consolers of the Lonely !! This one is on Spotify , Broken Boy is not. Frog are you using Spotify or MOG? It's free with a short 30 second Spotify commercial every five songs. Ten bucks a month for premium service. You can listen to 300,000 albums or so. About 30 million songs. It's just a fantastic way to listen to new music/bands without blowing money on a cd or album. |
Frog , did you try either of the two Raconteurs albums I recommended?? |
Notec, I thought this thread was also addressing modern Pop music as well. Alt J being a perfect example of of a great Pop Rock band that impresses me with their innovative style and fatantastic song writing and musicianship. Ray, is there any bands /albums that you find fantastic in the past 5 years or so? |
Ok Frog, glad you are digging the Raconteurs! I like Jack White as well, but to me these two albums are near flawless. Ok , so that makes me two for two with the Frog. ;-) I am still working on my list for essential albums / bands in the Pop Rock and singer songwriters. There will be some Alt. Country as well. My list is over 80 albums strong! Frog, ( and anyone else who dares) the next band I would love you to test drive is Alt. J . They won best new band in England this year. When I first heard this band I was like, what the hell is this??!! In a great way though . The connection was immediate . The album is called, An Awesome Wave. And what a ride it is!! Be prepared to hear a voice and sound unlike any other band. Start with these selections : Tessallate, Breezeblocks, please crank up the volume for Fitzpleasure ! , Something Good, Matilda An open mind is needed for this band as the lead singers voice may sound like Kermit the Frog . But the music , his voice , works together to create a musical experience that must be heard to be believed. Enjoy!! |
Notec, I listen to Alternative Rock/ alternative Pop, Alt Folk,Alt Country, in other words bands not found on commercial radio. You will find these bands played on Public radio, NPR etc... I have also found that some members here have introduced me to some great bands/albums which I find really enjoyable ! Please Notec, enlighten us with music from your impeccable taste. I have found the 2013 best album thread a bit weak as you have noticed as well. Not all the worst as you said, in fact I am really enjoying the New Vampire Weekend album alot!! You are so quick to put down others suggestions as crap , but I have yet to get a viable suggestion from you. So, what are you listening to these days? I as am sure many others would welcome your input being that are taste sucks , as yours does not. |
I just don't see the need for me to revisit these great groups of yesteryear with all of the great current new bands and bands that have been discovering for the past twenty years. Sure, I will listen to the Beatles if I hear them on the radio, but I spend 99% of time exploring new music and listening to bands and music that I find very enjoyable. |
Frog, did you you see my post on 6/14? Did you have a listen to Alt J? |
Actusreus, Are you still 15 years old? Air guitar? Lol... I'm 47 and my taste in music has matured and evolved through the years. Jam bands, Alt Country, Alt.Rock,Alt Folk, etc... There is so much fantastic music coming out every year, it's a pity you can't get on board and enjoy it. I am finding new artist that are producing albums that I find awesome , and in some cases I consider them masterpieces. Many of the recordings are very good as well. Have you ever listened to My Morning Jacket? I can recommend Circutial and Z. Both are fantastic, IMHO Another jamming band you may get up and boogie to is The Wood Brothers. All three of their albums! |
Goose, you start a thread called why most new music sucks, and you want someone to write you a comprehensive list of awesome albums from the past ten years?? Why would someone do that for you? (Um, I actually did this for you and others, and for myself ,when I was had some free time) I have spent years and many countless hours discovering and researching to find this music. Are you really going to listen to this music? I have actually mentioned a few stellar albums here. Did you check em out? My list has over a hundred albums so far. I am happy to share great music with people. So Goose, I challenge you to listen to these albums first before I print my whole list. And please respond with your feedback to the music. Alt J, An Awesome Wave ( try Breezeblocks, Something Good,Fitzpleasure, then continue to listen to the whole album if your intrigued and blown away) Jim James new album is pure genius!! Called Regions of Light and Sound of God, I recommend listening all the way through. Grizzly Bear, album is Shields. Wow!! I love it!, do you? Modern Vampires new one, called Modern Vampires of the City is a classic. Fleet Foxes, Helplessness Blues is sooooo good! Phosphorescents new album called Muchacho is flawless!! It's mellow and melodic though. Perfect I say ! The Shins, Port of Morrow is so solid. Do you like singer songwriters? Damien Jurado's Maraqopa , floored me! Want dark and foreboding ? But equally awesome, try the Antlers , Burst Apart and Hospice. There is 9 albums that I would be happy to enjoy on a desert island. Let me know what you think of these Gems. I am happy to share so many more if your taking the time to listen with an open mind. Enjoy, Todd |
Goose , you asked for a list of some great music from the past few years, and I suggested 9 albums to listen to start. By ignoring these great music selections you make it evident that you really only want to bitch and whine about the current state of music. There is plenty of music being produced every year that is as good or even better than the Beatles ,Stones,Who, etc... IMHO Most audiophiles on here are saying the same thing I am. You have two fellow detractors patting you on the back for your spirited negativity. Goose listen to some music with an open mind. If you go into listening sessions with negativity and skepticism chances are you will dislike these awesome albums. If you don't want to trust my taste in music, go check the archives here for album of the years for the past ten years. There is plenty of great albums in there. Try the online magazine Pitchfork for their best albums. Chances are you will ignore my past two post, not listen to any of the fine suggestions I've put forward . You will continue your pointless rant about the state of pathetic music today , while hundreds of fantastic albums/bands allude your closed mind. |
Tostadosnidos, the sky is blue where I come from because I embrace great new music, art, movies etc... I would think that for you skeptics, haters, and closed minded individuals the weather is real dark ,cloudy, with a chance to listen to the same old crap over and over again. It's all good I guess, you guys keep recycling the same old music, I'll embrace the great musicians/artist of today. I love music period! But if I had to listen to Zep, The Beatles, Who, over and over I would sell my rig and find a new hobby. |
