As Little Village had Ry Cooder on it, it reminded me of another LP with Ry I have not listened to for a while….

Norman Greenbaum - Petaluma. Reprise 1972

Zukerman plays and conducts Vivaldi. Concerto 5, 6, 7, & 8. English Chamber Orchestra. Columbia Masterworks. 1974.

Not a huge Vivaldi fan, but this sounds very nice today. Nicely recorded, mixed, etc.

@deadhead1000

Gotcha. Must be a nice set.
@drrsutliff

I used to live in Rocky River as well with my ex, then moved to Lakewood. All my family is from the East side, so I’m a bit of a ‘black sheep’ ;-)

I’ll keep it going....

Szell conducts Schumann. Symphony 1&2 (from a box set). The Cleveland Orchestra. Columbia. 1971.

John Mayall - Jazz Blues Fusion - Live in Boston & New York. Polydor. 1972.
Jerry Garcia - Garcia (technically untitled, a ‘Garcia’ sticker applied after printing). Warner Brothers. 1972 version.
@drrsutliff

Outstanding Recording. Attended many concerts at Severence Hall with Szell conducting in early 70s with the family. Appreciate them more in retrospect than I probably did at the time.

Being in Cleveland (Lakewood) I’m a very biased Cleveland Orchestra ‘fanboy’, even today. But, no doubt it is very hard to replace the likes of Szell; one of the great conductors of all times. Maazel, Dohnanyi, and Welser-Most (and Boulez as well) are/were all very good in their own right, but hard to come after Szell, who essentially made The Cleveland Orchestra into one of the best in the world, and actually still are. Never saw the Orchestra with Szell, (my family moved out of Cleveland at that time), and am jealous you had that opportunity.

Welser-Most is actually doing some interesting things today, after his 18th year. He just created the Orchestra’s very own recording label, and if you check out his/their new and first recording under that label, it is quite impressive. If you have Tidal (or similar) I know they have portions of it. All very promising in continuing to keep The Cleveland Orchestra ‘on the world stage’.

@noromance

Of course. Stay young. That’s what I keep telling myself at 62.
Back to classical....

Gidon Kremer - Edition Lockenhause. Vol 1&2, 2 LP set. Music by composers : Franck, Caplet, Poulenc, Janacek, Strawinsky, Schostakowitsch (in German, German pressing). Recorded live 1981, 82, & 84 at the Lockenhaus Festival. EDM Records. 1986.
Wolfgang Sawallisch Conducts Schubert - Symphonies 5&6. From a box set of Schubert’s complete 8 symphonies. Staatskapelle Dresden. Philips, released late 70’s. Dutch pressing.

Pete Townshend/Ronnie Lane - Rough Mix. Polydor 1977, New Zealand release

Solti conducts Beethoven’s 3rd ‘Eroica’. Wiener Philharmoniker. Decca. Recorded 1959.
Brian Eno - Before and After Science. island. 1977.

its all Uber’s fault for bringing up Fripp.
;-) Hey, worth it, hadn’t played that album in a long time and forgot how good it is.

perhaps Taking Tiger Mountain lurks
Had to do it...

Brian Eno - Taking Tiger Mountain (by strategy). Island. 1974.
Bernstein conducts Prokofiev #5. New York Philharmonic. Columbia “360 Sound”. 1967.
I have a Bohm Beethoven cycle of the 9 symphonies in a box set, with the Wiener Philharmoniker, but it has no concertos included.

All the various Beethoven concertos I have are singular albums for the most part. My piano concertos are limited, as I feel the piano in an orchestra is very hard to record correctly, so to be honest, I tend to avoid them as so many just don’t do the piano performance justice.

Uber - Here Come the Warm Jets

you know it was in the pile..,,

oh man, I used to have that and lost it along the way somehow. Fantastic album.

@spiritofradio

@Bkeske,  sorry,  the Emperor, that we’d been talking about.  It’s been in my head for a couple of weeks.

ahhhh....yes. It’s a very powerful concerto.
I have my eyes on a couple different versions on Discogs right now.

2nd arrival. New copy off Discogs…

Richard Thompson - Live in Austin TX. New West Records 2LP gatefold 2012

Recorded 2001, Austin City Limits

Collins conducts Elgar’s Falstaff & Bliss conducts Bliss - A Color Symphony. London Symphony Orchestra. DECCA. 1971. British pressing.
Well, since I had to go the eye Doctor for a check-up, and had my eyes dilated, can’t get much work done, so may as well play music ;-)

Juilliard String Quartet - Debussy and Ravel String Quartets. RCA Victor ‘Living Stereo’. 1960. Reissue....date?
Andre Previn conducts Rachmaninoff Concertos 1&4. Royal Philharmonic w/Leonard Pennario. RCA Red Seal ‘Dynagroove’. 1965. Re-issue, unknown date.

Hard to fine nicely recorded piano concertos, especially older ones, but this is really very nice.
Boulez conducts Schoenberg - Serenade OP. 24. Domaine Musical. Everest. Recorded 1961.
Szell conducts Tchaikovsky - Variations on a Rococo Theme for Cello and Orchestra / Weber - Overtures to Dream Freischutz & Oberon. New York Philharmonic. Columbia Masterworks. Mono. Released 1971 (?).
@j_damon
Mine also has ‘Garcia/Jerry Garcia’ on the spine.....well, what’s left of it ;-)

Mine also has the transparent Garcia sticker. As I understand, not all had that, but many/most did.

I also have his next solo album, clearly titled Garcia on the cover.

The first solo is a really great album, but then, I’m simply a huge Jerry fan.
@mammothguy54

Steppenwolf "Monster" Ver good album and the SQ is fairly good, too.

+1
Spun my copy not so long ago. Had not listened to it in a long long time. It actually surprised me how good the SQ was on that album.
Szell conducts Brahms piano concerto #2. The Cleveland Orchestra w/Leon Fleisher. EPIC. Mono. 1962.

It never ceases to amaze me how good some of these mono recordings are, especially when they have a ‘stereo’ quality/soundstage while listening.
Well, you guys got me thinking I’ve not spun the ‘original’ basement tapes in a long while...

Bob Dylan & The Band - The Basement Tapes. CBS 1975
Karajan conducts Sibelius - Finlandia, Valse Triste, Der Schwan Von Tuonela, Tapiola. Berliner Philharmoniker. Deutsche Grammophon. German pressing. 1967.
RE: Mink

Yea, glad you guys enjoyed it. I literally hadn't played that album since the early 80's.

Actually forgot how well it was recorded and engineered. Full of depth. And also how good the music was.

'Mink' was an interesting difference vs the rest of the 'CBGB's bands' at the time.
Juilliard String Quartet - Debussy, String Quartet In G Minor, Op. 10 & Ravel, String Quartet In F. RCA Victor Red Seal ‘Living Stereo’ reissue, late 60’s, originally 1960
Shakti w/John McLaughlin - Natural Elements. Columbia. 1977.

Have not listened to this in a while. Sounds good.
@tomic601

My LiL brothers stereo came from Play it Again SAM but I got my Dokorder R2R 4 track there, which set me down a path of recording live music, mixing sound...

They still carry some nice used equipment from low to high end, but a bit pricey. But, I think most of their equipment has been serviced as well. Haven’t been in there for a long time. Most of my used equipment has come via other on-line sources. Most their new stuff is Pro-Ject turntables, cartridges, and accessories.

I’ve thought about taking my Nakamaichi tape deck to them for a tune-up, belt replacement, etc. I have a feeling they are more than capable. I wouldn’t mind having them check out my old Belles 400A amp either, but it seems to working pretty darn well right now; got it from a reputable used dealer in Brooklyn NY.

They have a web site, you should check it out.

Unfortunately, Cleveland has no real higher end audio dealers anymore aside from Don Better who sells out of his residence in Shaker Heights (sells some Vandy stuff ;-) ). Most the others are HT guys. It’s a shame the city/area of Cleveland has no more than one legit mid to high end retail shop. Sad really.
Mahavishnu Orchestra Live - Between Nothingness & Eternity. Recorded live in Central Park. CBS. 1973

@puffball08

Yea, went to the web site earlier, and saw that. Decisions decisions 🙂

Talked to mom yesterday, she is doing OK. 87 years old with arthritis and major back and spinal problems over the last many years, it just doesn’t get easy on her when she has other medical issues. Always hoping for the best. Thanks.
