@bslon

Oooh, nice way to end the evening Bill. I fell asleep watching Olympic Figure Skating - far less worthwhile…

Tsuyoshi Yamamoto Trio - Blues To East

most certainly an audiophile recording

Black Sabbath

“BLACK SABBATH – BORN AGAIN MASTER TAPES FOUND; TONY IOMMI PLANNING TO REMIX”

not an audiophile recording…

@sbank Please tell us about the Prokofiev/ New York Ensemble of the Philharmonic scholarship winners.

@bkeske @tomic601 I streamed some of the music on the Scriabin box (not the same album, I don’t think it’s on the services) and ordered the box.   Thanks!

@seekerbob Re: Crosby If I Could Only Remember My Name 50th. The bonus material on the digital streaming/CD version is also worthwhile.   It includes early versions of some of Crosby’s contributions to the Most excellent 1st Crosby Nash album (one of my favorite records).

@big_greg Will you and yours be attending the Pink Martini Valentines concert?   Grays Anatomy and I have tickets.

’Beast of Burden’ excellent ambiguity in that choice.   I always thought Sans Souci would make a nice boat name - in fact for probably the exact opposite reasons.  Mine was ‘Friend’.

Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack

I’m never listening to you again.

Kenny Burrell - God Bless The Child, an early / first CTI pressing. I bought it used: cover very worn but quiet vinyl. I had listened to very little of his recordings. It’s just beautiful. He really seemed to pluck those strings hard! I just love the sound!

@rafevw Welcome to THE thread.  Thanks for posting about this album.  I was not familiar with it but streaming it now and really digging the sound.   Great players! And the strings are really nice too.  RVG recording but so far to me sounds more modern.  Maybe this digital is remixed, don’t k ow.  Great post.  On my want list now.  Thanks!

Nala Sinephro - Space 1.8

@slaw I think music like this sounds particularly good on my Quads.  I mean recordings of electronic music that was never really played on real instruments in real space.

Here is what I learned (mostly from Brian E) about posting images here:

Get a postimage account. I don’t think there is an Apple app. Just bookmark or save the mobile web page to your iPhone’s screen and it will work as handily as an app.

Go there and (pull down the menu at the top right) and “upload “ square (or whatever shaped) photos from your photo library on your phone.

Copy the URL of the photo by using the “direct” link option (second one down) using the little icon to the right. (Don’t copy the url in the box there it won’t copy to Agon).

go to Agon thread and refresh the page

Paste url into the photo box in the new menu above the text box.  The photo box has an icon of mountains I think (not the regular text box that doesn’t work)

Click center

Go back up a little and type 350 x 350. With the lock on It Will do the second number for you (or it will be close to 350 anyway)

click done or whatever

check the preview

post your photo

its pretty lame and way to involved, best attempted in a state of grace…

@j_husker Ordered the AP Someday My Prince Will Come this afternoon.   Really like the music but never had it on vinyl.

@dayglow I apologize Evan if I took the thread a little off topic.  I agree with you about our primary reason for being here.

@noromance

Have you heard the version of Górecki
Symphony No. 3 with Lisa Gerrard? For me, it's the best of the three.

I haven’t.   Thanks, It’s cued up on my streamer.

@reubent 👍 I have braced 4hx3w’s full of records and they’re fine. With the 1x3’s screwed across the back and the whole thing attached to the house I think the 5x5s will be ok. Best thing would be to screw a plywood back onto them but I haven’t gone that far. 5x5 is just going to be a lot more space efficient.

Hey Tom.  I have several other IKEA Kallax shelves full of records and some of the predecessor model (forget the silly name).  They’re pedestrian but are the perfect size for records.   I think they average about 75 records per section.  So, this shelf might hold about 1,800.  That many records is a lot of weight so I added the wood braces/backstops.  I do this on the 3-wide shelves too.   Might need to leave some squares open for lighter stuff on the 5 wide.  Is that what you were suggesting?

Expansion …

Henryk Górecki
Symphony No. 3 Opus 36 (1976)
Nonesuch 2016
075597949544

Recorded May 1991 at CTS Studios, London
Dawn Upshaw Vocals
David Zinman conducting the London Sinfonietta

This record was mastered by Bernie Grundman and has particularly important bass register phenomenon going on.  Full of pathos, translation of the sparse lyrics unnecessary.

Re: Further exploration of classical music.  This is an amazing and beautiful record that I often recommend to people who don’t know or even dislike orchestral/classical  music in order to get them to a place to benefit.   A close, receptive listen to this might change your life - as it did mine.

I also have another version which is:

Henryk Górecki
Symphony No. 3 (Symphony
   Of Sorrowful Songs) Op. 36
Domino (UK) 2019
887828039517

Beth Gibbons Vocals
Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra

Interestingly, Beth Gibbons is the vocalist from the trip hop band Portishead.  If you’re inclined to be nonplussed by that information resist that urge.

They are both really good records.

@sailmed 👍  I believe that at one time it was frequently performed music by orchestras around the world.   Maybe not so much the last few years.

@big_greg @tomic601 Played my Rhino copy of Crosby’s If I could only remember my name a couple times and also played the digital in anticipation of the 50th’s arrival.  So far still in route.  This will be a rare duplicate record in my collection.  Much expectation and anticipation. It’s such a great record.

Now playing:

Ok, this may be presumptuous but ok, if you’re looking to try some new ‘classical’ music try this and see how you feel. Doesn’t need to be this (very expensive) issue. This is beautiful music. There are several very good recordings of it in addition to the above. Boston Symphony Orchestra under Seiji Ozawa is very good and might cost you $5-$10. Ok, this is very well known music so I’m not trying to reveal some hidden gem or anything - might be familiar already.  Even so, I suppose this could be described as “accessible”. Personally I feel there is nothing to be ashamed of by digging on this. I find it very pretty but also quite moving. YMMV.

Thanks to @bkeske I have learned to post photos on Audiogon from an IPhone SE.  It should not have been this difficult.
