Holy smokes Brian, that is interesting indeed. Gonna have to look into that one!

Edit: Found it on Tidal

@noromance

Very interesting. I played a bit through Tidal on the bedroom system before crashing for the day. Noticed there were two versions, one sounded better. But, too late, so had to get to sleep. Will check it out further on the main rig.

Karl Böhm conducts Beethoven - 9 Symphonies. Wiener Philharmoniker. Deutsche Grammophon box set 1972.

Have not spun a Beethoven cycle for a while, so pulled Böhm, as I have not listened to this cycle for quite some time.

@noromance

As I say, there are two versions on Tidal, and both have different cover art than yours: The release dated 2011 sounds less ‘thin’ to my ears and more enjoyable.

@noromance

Thanks Brian. Just checked, they will arrive tomorrow. Looking forward to checking them out. I love the Tele/Dynaco smooth plate AX7’s, so will be interesting to compare these ‘au7’s’ with them, and see which works better together.

@noromance

Hey Brian, I have a couple of CBS-Hytron 5814A black plate tubes coming to use in the 12au7’s sockets of the Trumpet (looks like they might arrive tomorrow). Ever heard these tubes? I think these are from the 50’s with red lettering. I was casually reading about them and became interested to see how different they may be vs the NOS Brimar’s I’m currently using.

Not too expensive at all, so worth ‘playing around’ and trying something different.

@noromance

My Brimar’s are NOS CV4003 originally from Upscale. And no, not black plate. Yea, the Amperex are said to be quite good, but obviously much more $$$.

As I say, these were pretty inexpensive, (only $58 for 2 shipped), so can hardly go wrong to experiment a little. Many have said they are quite good….we’ll see.

@noromance

Well, the CBS-Hytron 5814A‘s arrived, and was anxious to compare them to the Brimar’s. Wow, I think I like these a lot. More detailed and ‘clear’. Because of that, the dynamics seem as good if not better. Listening to some complex orchestration, the instruments seem better defined, and even the overall tone a bit better. Went back and forth twice, and I think I’ll keep these in over the Brimar’s for a while, possibly for good.

To me, a fairly unknown tube manufacturer that performs very well and sounds great. Glad I took a shot with them.

@slaw

Not that I noticed Steve. To be honest I’m not sure spec-wise what their gain is vs the 12au7’s, but know from reading, many have used them in place of au’s, and seemingly ‘equivalent’.

@noromance

@bkeske Good to hear the 5814A worked. As I mentioned, I find the CV400x to be a bit too warm so these are going to seem like a breath of fresh air!

It’s interesting as I never considered replacing the Brimar’s after installing them, as they are quite popular and were highly recommended. So, I somewhat ignored the au7’s and concentrated on the ax7’s instead. This was a nice change, but now wonder what an Amperex, Mullard, or Telefunken, etc. might bring to the table. But, for the time being, I’ll enjoy these. Seem like a bargain to me.

@puffball08

I noted your exchange about 12AU7 and 5814 dual triodes a few pages back. Just curious Brian, what brand 5814 did you use?

Hey Daniel, I purchased a couple old CBS-Hytron 5814A’s. I believe they are from the late 50’s with red lettering. I believe the earlier of these tubes had white lettering, then blue in the 60’s (which are said not to be as desirable).

@noromance

Brian, on the Trumpet, it all depends on the internal capacity of the DC regulator feeding the tubes on the board.

Gotcha. I think I was wrong anyway. 300ma is .3A, not 3A. So, not a huge difference really. I would have to check with Jim. Jim includes the schematics in the manual, but it is beyond my knowledge to know if the capacity is adequate
