@spiritofradio
Fantastic. I believe Peter feels the Voice may be the best cart he makes for the cost.

The Nash Ensemble - The Chamber Music Of Malcolm Arnold #2. Hyperion 1986 UK release
|
@reubent
According to Discogs, most with that # were the original release from 1966, but they did reissue in 2008 on 180g. The reissue used the old Capitol label also, with the ‘rainbow’ ring. There was also a 2016 reissue by Capitol.
If you have access to Discogs, the dead wax info would identify it, but it will take a bit of work as there are numerous releases with that number.

@sbank
@bkeske You're inspiring me to pull classical LPs, thank you.

👍🏼 Enjoy. I bet that Bartok with Reiner is excellent!
Happy Thanksgiving all. Just arrived at my moms for the next day and a half, so no music for me unfortunately

@boxer12
Bit the bullet & bought a new Tonearm. It’s a "Thales Easy" and is scheduled for delivery on Monday. Pretty excited about this (!) & will be setting up the table for it this weekend.
Very cool tonearm Tim. Congrats!

First of two LP’s that arrived today.
Mark Eitzel - Don’t Be a Stranger. Merge Records 2012.
This is kinda special. I knew Mark in Columbus when he was in a band called The Cowboys, which he formed, then The Naked Skinnies afterwards, with another friend of mine on bass. The Skinnies left collectively for San Francisco, where they fairly quickly dismantled, and Mark formed The American Music Club. Who had great success. Mark was a real character, and it was always enjoyable to hang out with him.
I believe this album was recorded following a long absence of music for Mark. As I understand he had a heart attack a couple years prior to this release.
|
The 2nd arrival…
The Sundays - Reading, Writing And Arithmetic. Geffen Records reissue 2018 180g, originally 1990.
Cost me plenty…but….sounds wonderful
|
The Modern Jazz Quartet - The Modern Jazz Quartet & Orchestra. Atlantic repress, date unknown, but probably late 60’s per label, originally 1961
Wow. First time playing this on the Treo’s and AQ cables. A pretty big increase in SQ all around.
|
Monty Alexander/Ray Brown/Herb Ellis - Trio. Concord Jazz 1981
|
Mingus - Mingus Ah Um. Columbia/MOV reissue/remaster 180g 2015, originally 1959
@dayglow 👍🏼
|
Frank Sinatra - Come Swing With Me!. Capitol 1961 stereo
|
@dayglow
Well, nothing beats Ray Brown’s Soular Energy, but that said, yea, I think all the Monty/Ray/Herb releases could be considered audiophile quality. Concord Jazz always did an excellent job IMO.
|
Joni Mitchell - Clouds. Reprise reissue 1976, originally 1969
|
@boxer12
Pretty cool you were able to pick up your old friends album Brian
Yes it is. Been on my radar for a while. In fact, just picked up another more recent solo LP by Mark today.
I figured you would know about American Music Club Tim. Really, there was so much of Mark in those LP’s (actually in all his bands), his solo efforts are very similar, just toned down a bit. But his lyrical masterwork is all there. Something I remember Rolling Stone magazine heaping high praise on him at the time of AMC’s first release.
You should check him/them out if you are unfamiliar, I think you would like it. Same for many here.
|
@boxer12
Think I'll give "Everclear" a try.
Highly acclaimed. Good choice. I have it on cassette. Need to get it on vinyl as well.
|
@sbank
@bkeske Brian, Yum to Ah Um! A desert island disc for sure.
Yes it is. Still a bit ‘60’s style stereo mix’, but not too bad. The performance is very good, and recording of the individual instruments still makes me pay attention.
A ‘standard’ jazz recording for sure.
|
Amadeus-Quartett : Beethoven Streichquartette - Op. 127‧130‧131‧132‧133‧135. Deutsche Grammophon 4LP box 1963 German release.
Beautiful set. (Yes, big tulips Jim 😉)
|
Szell conducts Mendelssohn - Incidental Music To "A Midsummer Night's Dream," Op. 61 & Schubert - Incidental Music To "Rosamunde". The Cleveland Orchestra. Columbia Masterworks reissue, probably mid-70’s, originally 1967
|
Szell conducts Brahms - Piano Concerto No. 2 In B-Flat Major. The Cleveland Orchestra with Leon Fleisher, piano. Odyssey 1973 reissue, originally 1962
|
@spiritofradio
Yea, I’ve seen the various sets, but am very impressed by my earlier pressings. Hard to believe they are from the early 60’s, and my box in NM condition. Really sounds wonderful, a little ‘forward’, lacking a bit of overall depth in the soundstage/imaging, but pretty darn good all the same.
Going my memory, but (I believe) the 1st movement adagio in the 131st is insanely good. For whatever reason, that really captivated me.
|
Karajan conducts Sibelius - Finlandia / Valse Triste / Der Schwan Von Tuonela / Tapiola. Berliner Philharmoniker. Deutsche Grammophon 1967 German release
|
Sir John Barbirolli conducts Grieg - Peer Gynt. Hallé Orchestra With The Ambrosian Singers. Angel 1969

Listening to my box of Beethoven string quartets, I realized I have not listened to any of his symphonies for a while, so….
Szell conducts Beethoven - The Nine Symphonies. The Cleveland Orchestra. Columbia Masterworks 7LP box, 1974 reissue, originally 1964.
As usual, will start with No. 1 and see where it goes….

What is up with this captcha verification??????? Is anyone else getting this?
|
@mammothguy54
Joel, just took a peek at them. Dang, beautiful boxes he creates. If they sound as good as they look, cha ching!
Very exciting.

I have a feeling with all the spam, I guess they decide to use authorization to combat it? I sure hope this is temporary, as it is a pain in da butt.
|
@mammothguy54
Nice Joel, have a nice trip! Very cool. Seems like you might be pretty convinced even prior to the trip 😉
|
Interesting Jim, never heard of that album before. Interesting trio. Tried to find it on Tidal, but no go
|
@puffball08
From Fire’s website:
To clarify, there are no additional notes on the jacket itself, which is what I meant. After asking, I did think of going to their website to see if there was any additional info, but you have done that, so thanks for that.
I do not have those particular originals any longer, so cannot compare either. I will say they do sound very good regardless.
I have no problem with original pressings, and prefer them and seek them out, (see all my original classical recordings), but having been so disappointed by many original pressing Discogs purchases before, I felt safer going with a new copy instead to insure vinyl quality. I am not disappointed.
It is good to know Paul Hamann was involved.
|
@puffball08
@bkeske Brian-no offense meant.
None taken. My ’matter of fact’ style at times may have inferred that, but no.
It is interesting that Discogs does list Suma as being the recording studio of record on the Fire reissues (which I did check). Perhaps someone did their homework and knew that Suma (Paul) had some involvement. That is a good thing IMO. I have a feeling Fire may have wanted to keep the cover sleeve as original as possible, so provided no additional info regarding the remastering.
Having the same concerns, i questioned @boxer12 about these Fire releases, and he gave them a thumbs-up, so that was good enough for me 😉
|
Don't let him sell anything called Apollo 13!
😁
|
@tomic601
Brian - i have the 45 rpm version of The Three headed my way from a reputable seller from …..Ukraine…. a first for me….
My original pressing has been ordered. Jim, had I know you were going to get the 45, I may have waited and begged the one you have off of you.😁
That album really does interest me. Will be looking forward to receiving it.
