Just arrived, and had to play hooky from work and spin it….

Ray Brown Trio - Soular Energy. Concord 1985.

Just fantastic shape, NM. Pricy, but worth it.
Another new arrival….

Monty Alexander / Ray Brown / Herb Ellis - Trio. Concord 1981

Very very nice.
The last of my new arrivals today….

Monty Alexander / Ray Brown / Herb Ellis with special guest John Frigo - Triple Treat II. Concord 1988

Recorded live at the Lao, Santa Monica, CA 1987

  "John Mayall & Friends"

I’ve had my eyes on that one too. Almost all my Mayall collection is pre-80’s, but I’ve head some of his newer releases are very good. Should just check them out on Tidal I guess, to take a listen.
@j_husker
I’ve found all my vinyl replacements are better than my CD versions. Of course I don’t have a digital rig set-up like @tomic601

In every case, especially with my vinyl rig now, LP’s just sound ‘right’; More natural, with better timbre and tone.

I won’t replace them all, but the more important ones? Yes, when I can or if they are available.
The Eels - Beautiful Freak. DreamWorks 2015 reissue, EU release, originally 1996
I’m diggin ‘Deconstruction’ Steve. Really good.

10” LP’s is a bit odd, but isn’t that just like E? 😁
Another new one, one of three Eels…

The Eels - The Deconstruction. PIA America 2 10” LP’s 2018
One of four new arrivals today…

Leonard Cohen - Thanks for The Dance. Columbia/Sony 2019
From first to last….

Eels - Earth To Dora. E Works Records 2020 EU release
Steve, I liked it straight away. Not sure why, but I wasn’t expecting much (never even streamed it), but it surprised me. Really good mix.
Jumping on the bandwagon as I was in that section of the stacks….

R.E.M. - Fables Of The Reconstruction / Reconstruction Of The Fables. I.R.S. 1985
The Sibelius Academy Quartet : Sibelius - String Quartet in A Minor & String Quartet In B Flat Major, Op. 4. Finlandia 1985 EU release
Panocha Quartet : Martinů - String Quartet’s No. 2 & No. 3. Supraphon 1983 Czechoslovakia release
The other arrival…

Monty Alexander, Ray Brown, and Herb Ellis - Triple Treat (I). Concord 1982. This was the first of the ‘Triple Treat’ releases by the three.

This is kinda cool, as it was signed by Herb Ellis.
The Taneyev Quartet of Leningrad - S.Taneyev - Quartet No.2 for Two violins, viola and cello. Мелодия 1980 U.S.S.R. release
Two new LP’s arrived….so taking a break from classical for a bit. I rarely mix genres, but here goes…

Leo Kottke - S/T. Chrysalis 1976

Ive heard other here who have this, and I haven’t, so that’s ‘fixed’. I do believe with this, my Leo collection is now complete from the 60’s thru the 70’s.
@tomic601

I have been sampling various Mahler No. 6 versions on Qobuz…

Berlin is winning so far….

Not really a surprised Jim. But….did you check-out the Sony remaster of Szell and the Clevelanders? Pretty good.

Who was the conductor of the Berlin 6th you like?
The Music Group Of London : Vaughan Williams - String Quartet in G Minor & String Quartet in A Minor. EMI/His Masters Voice 1973 UK release
@mammothguy54

Yep Joel, I remember you commenting about that Kottke LP. I like it, better than I was expecting, but there are others that are my favorites. Regardless, I was on a mission to complete my collection through the 70’s on vinyl. Makes me feel good.

I’ll certainly check out your system page 👍🏼
@j_husker
Wow! That sounds like fun. Will be interested to see what you think.
Benjamin Britten - Early Chamber Music : Temporal Variations, Phantasy In F Minor (For String Quintet), Alla Marcia, Three Divertimenti, Two Insect Pieces, & Phantasy Quartet Op. 2 (For Oboe And Strings). Derek Wickens, John Constable, The Gabrieli String Quartet, Kenneth Essex. Unicorn-Kanchana 1983 UK release
Herbert Blomstedt conducts Nielsen - The Concertos Of Carl Nielsen : Clarinet Concerto, Op. 57, Flute Concerto, Violin Concerto, Op. 33, & Symphonic Rhapsody. Danmarks Radios Symfoniorkester. Seraphim 2LP box 1975
@tomic601

Found it Brian, i want to listen entirely but it lacks some air as i stream it vs. DG with Kirill Petrenko.

As good as the Sony remaster is, from a ‘audiophile’ recording comparison, it would hard to compete with a very recent modern recording. Especially when The Berlin Philharmonic is involved. They hold very high standards today.
Jim, as you know, a conductor can make a difference, and then, it’s really subjective which is ‘best’. I have quite a few works by various conductors and orchestras, and deciding which to play depends on my mood, and what I want it to sound like ‘today’.

As the kids used to say, ‘it’s all good’. 😉

Check out the Mahler collection with Chailly and The Royal Concertgebouw too. Nice set.
The Allegri String Quartet : Britten - String Quartet No. 1 In D, Op. 25 & String Quartet No. 2 In C, Op. 36. London Treasury Series 1976
Szell conducts Dvořák - The Slavonic Dances. The Cleveland Orchestra. Columbia Masterworks ‘2 eye’ 2LP box. 1965
The Claremont Quartet w/Joanna Nickrenz, piano : Schoenberg - Ode to Napoleon Buonaparte for Strings Quartet / Webern - String Quartet, Op. 28 / Stravinsky - Three Pieces for String Quartet & Concerto for String Quartet. Nonesuch 1968
Szell conducts Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2 In B Flat & Thirty-Two Variations In C. The Cleveland Orchestra w/Emil Gilels, piano. Angel 1970
@big_greg

Sugarloaf S/T is queued up from the free box after a shower and a cleaning.

Holy smokes. I have their second album, ‘Spaceship Earth’.
Szell conducts Bruckner Symphony No. 3. The Cleveland Orchestra. Columbia Masterworks 1966

Bruckner has never clicked with me yet, but I keep trying. Waiting for the light bulb to turn on….if ever.
I’ve thought about buying the Magnepan LRS’s just for fun. And maybe use occasionally for a change of pace.

Then I think about moving my 2CE Sigs, and then back in place, and re-dialing them in….and it don’t sound like too much fun after all. 😁
@big_greg

Brian, how is that Sugarloaf title? Don't think I've ever heard it.

I would call it just ‘OK’. Not something I would buy, lets just say that.

I bought it in a used record store in the mid-70’s, cheap. Was just curious, and the price was right at the time….probably a dollar….or less
Michael Ponti plays Scriabin - 12 Piano Sonatas. VOX Box 3 LP box 1972

A simple awakening for the (holi)day
@mammothguy54

Enjoy Joel, we’ll keep the vinyl warm in your absence 🙂
Sticking with another solo piano performance….

Claudio Arrau plays Debussy - Images & Estampes. Philips 1980. Netherlands release

Horowitz plays Schumann - Kreisleriana & Variations On A Theme By Clara Wieck. Columbia Masterworks 1970, radio station copy
Leonard Bernstein conducts Shostakovich - Piano Concerto No. 1 With Trumpet Op. 35 & Poulenc - Concerto For 2 Pianos And Orchestra In D Minor. New York Philharmonic with André Previn (Shostakovich) and Arthur Gold & Robert Fizdale (Poulenc). Columbia Masterworks 1962
Alois Springer conducts Roussel - Piano Concerto, Op. 36 & Ravel - Piano Concerto In G Major. Hamburg Symphony with Maria Littauer, piano. Turnabout 1971

New Riders of the Purple Sage - S/T. Columbia 1971

To say this LP has been well played is an understatement.

Ormandy conducts Ives - Symphony No. 1 & Three Places In New England. Philadelphia Orchestra. Columbia Masterworks 1968

@boxer12

I love the live version of my "baby's on fire," from that album.

As do I Tim, but IMO the whole side 1 of that LP is also really really good.

Karel Ančerl conducts Smetana - From Bohemia's Woods And Fields / Vltava & Dvořák - In Nature's Realm / My Home. The Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. Supraphon 1975 Czechoslovakia release
Karajan conducts Sibelius - Symphonie Nr. 5 Op. 82 & Tapiola Op. 112. Berlin Philharmonic. Deutsche Grammophon 1965 German release
Finally snagged John Hartford’s Aereo-Plain. Been waiting for nice one one to ’fall through the cracks’ (bid on quite a few, but lost every time), but not to be, so spent the cash necessary. So, a bit pricey, but never owned it personally. Wish I had, ’back in the day’. Suppose to be a ’high’ VG+ vinyl condition. Hope so. Fingers crossed.

Vaughan Williams - String Quartet In G Minor. Aeolian String Quartet

Arnold Bax - Sonata No. 1 For Violin And Piano. Frank Merrick, piano & Henry Holst, violin

Revolution Records 1971 UK release
