A week or two ago I asked if anyone had a recommendation for a good release of The Who - "Who's Next". I don't believe I got any feedback, so I went to Discogs to see if I could find anything. There are a few recent reissue/remaster releases available. The one that seemed to get the best reviews, at a good price, was the 2012 Music on Vinyl (MOV) reissue/remaster. I found a new copy for a reasonable price on eBay and it arrived today.
I gotta say, this one sounds really good. Best I've ever hear "Who's Next". I do not have an older/original vinyl, but I have 2 different CDs, including one 2000's remaster w/bonus material, and the MOV vinyl release is better.
Recommended for anyone who loves this album and doesn't already have a good copy.

@mammothguy54 - Good Luck Joel. If you have any questions about the version, etc., just let me know. The 2012 MOV version sounds very good.

Father John Misty - "God's Favorite Customer"
|
Matthew Sweet - "Girlfriend"
|
@geof3 - Thanks for your comment.
I think it's really good, especially for a 1971 rock album. Apparently the 2012 MOVLP664 is based on a 1995 Jon Astley remix from the original 16 multi track tapes. From the reviews I've read, many folks think it's the best available. I've not heard a good copy of an OP, so can't comment on that. But I do have two different CD versions, and the 2012 MOVLP664 is superior to both of them.
There may be better, I don't know. But I do know the 2012 MOVLP664 I have is very satisfying to me. And it's one of my all time favorite albums, so I'm really happy to have it.

A rare lunchtime LP listen for me. Just received in the mail from a discogs seller.....
RUSH - "All the World's a Stage"
2015 Rush Re-Master. One of the better Discogs experience I've had. Perfectly graded, well packaged, arrived early. Not a value price, but worth it to get a great copy.
Rush Live on vinyl, as it was meant to be............. |
John Prine - "Fair and Square"
|
Lunchtime listening again.......
Timbuk 3 - "Greetings from......."
I've had this since it was first released. Every time I listen to it I think I enjoy it more than the previous listen. |
Finishing up "All the World's a Stage"
"What a show, what a show. Man o man, I guess that's it......." |
Chet Faker - "Thinking in Textures" |
|
@simao - Yep, it's a good one. So far, all of the Rush remasters I've bought are really good. Better than the original pressings for me. |
Queen - "A Night at the Opera" |
Glen Hansard - "Up All Night" |
|
|
The Hot Spot - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
John Lee Hooker, Miles Davis, Taj Mahal and more. Not on different tracks, playing together.... Pretty good stuff...
|
The Go Go's - "Beauty and the Beat"
From the cull decision pile. Trying to decide. Does it stay, or does it go?
|
So, I'm keeping The Go Go's - "Beauty and the Beat". It's better than I remembered, and it nostalgic, from a fun time in my life.
Up now:
Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young - "American Dream"
|
Heart - "Dreamboat Annie" |
The Dave Edmunds Band - "Live! I Hear You Rockin' " |
|
Don Henley - "Building the Perfect Beast" |

Savoy Brown - "Street Corner Talking"
|
Hooters - "Nervous Night" |
@spiritofradio - Paavo Jarvi you say? Another good ol' Cincinnati boy. Well for 10 years he was anyway. |
Correct. Soccer style, I believe...... |
@spiritofradio
I have no idea what you're talking about. I watched the video and she did not look "nervous"... :~) |
@spiritofradio - James, +1 on Pat Metheny - "American Garage". A true classic...
|
|
Talking Heads - "Fear of Music"
|
Black Pumas - "Capital Cuts"
|
@seekerbob - I just played Traffic - "The low spark of high heeled boys" earlier this evening myself....
Now Playing:
Emmylou Harris - "Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town"
|
@loomisjohnson - I really like Frontier Folk Nebraska. I was in the room at Southgate House the night they recorded their live album. Good stuff.
Another local band that sometimes sounds similar is 500 Miles to Memphis. If you're interested, try the album - "Blessed be the Damned". I've listened to it multiple times this past week and really like it. 500 Miles to Memphis self-identifies as the genre ' Americana Punk Rock. After multiple listens, I agree. Great stuff...
|
Kyle Craft - "Full Circle Nightmare"
|
@mammothguy54 - Agreed. The 3 LP Deluxe Half Speed Master Edition of "Live at Leeds" is fantastic. Finishing it up, side 6, this evening. Great stuff..... |
Rush - "Hemispheres"
Again!
A friggin' MasterClass in "How to get it done"! |
The Edgar Winters Group - "They Only Come Out at Night"
A classic from my Yute.......... |
Pete Townshend - "White City - A Novel" |
Rush - "A Farewell to Kings"
Lunchtime listening..... |
|
@slaw and All,
Fun stuff at lunch today. Was listening to Rush - "A Farewell to Kings", an album I've owned since it was released in 1977, and listened to hundreds of times. I heard something in the mix I never noticed before. An additional side/under tone in the orchestra bells at the beginning of "Cygnus X-1". Don't know if its the MyMat, or just a heightened awareness for some reason, but I never noticed this side/under tone before.
Oh, and I've been noticing better bass definition lately (since adding the MyMat). Bass lines are much easier to follow and bass tone delineation is better too....
I've really enjoyed listening to my LPs lately. MyMat was a recent addition and it's staying.....
Enjoy! |
|
@geof3 - Yep, great album. Love it. I actually have the 12" 45 of the live version of "Face the Face" from the movie - "White City". Have you seen the movie? It's on YouTube (in two parts). I think it's about a one hour feature. I have it on VHS. Really cool IMHO. I guess I'm a fan.... :~) |
Greg,
Good Luck with that one!
I did similar a while back, but I didn't catalog them in Discogs :~( Ended up culling hundreds of LPs due to the effort. Got my collection down to a reasonable size that fit into one IKEA Kallax 4X2 cubbie rack, about 800 records. Unfortunately, or, fortunately, depending on how you look at it, the collection grew again, to about 1000 LPs, and no longer fits in my record rack. |
@big_greg
The Very Best of Booker T & The MG's
That's a fun way to start your day! Love that album...... |
Jethro Tull - "Songs From the Wood" |
Pete Townshend - "Face the Face" - Live from the Deep End........
12" 45 RPM Single of "Face the Face" - Live from the Deep End, from the Pete Townshend Movie - "White City". The Live version is on side 1, Studio version of "Face the Face" and "Hiding Out" on side 2. |
@tomic601 - I re-read your post. Oh man, I'm really sorry about your crash. Take care of yourself and I hope you can find some comfort. Let us know how you are doing/progressing. I hope you get back to "normal" soon. |
@tomic601 - I hope you are OK.
word to wise always cycle with a helmet.
I do. Also when I'm skiing and snowboarding. |
@slaw -
Tom, you were a bad influence on Jim .
I hope I had nothing to do with that! Unfortunately, I've been there. As my wife says, "He's wrecked at least one of everything". She calls me her "Scratch and dent model". I've been in road and MTB bike crashes, car crashes, motorcycle crashes, skiing crashes and even a plane crash. I think I'm getting pretty close to my allotment. |
