Another arrival…

James posted spinning this not long ago. It’s been on my ‘want list’ for a while, and finally picked one up. My friends had this back in the day, but I had never purchased it.

It's A Beautiful Day - S/T. Capitol reissue 1970, originally 1969

@noromance

The Kottke posse 👍🏼
Another Leo arrival today….

Leo Kottke - My Feet Are Smiling. Capitol 1973

Recorded live at the Tyrone Guthrie Theater, Minneapolis
@noromance

I kid you not, a Karajan selection is next on my play list :-D
The next new arrival….

Karajan conducts Sibelius #5 & Tapiola Op. 112. Berliner Philharmoniker. Deutsche Grammophon 1965 German pressing
Saved this last arrival, well, for last….

Sir John Barbirolli conducts Mahler’s 9th. Berliner Philharmoniker. EMI/His Masters Voice German reissue, originally 1964. 1 1/2 LP gatefold. Unknown release, but guessing, early-mid 70’s.
Holy crap man, that Mahler 9th was amazing. The Adagio grabs you by the throat, gut, an heart, and doesn’t let you ignore it until the music finishes. What an incredible work.
@spiritofradio

That guy, David LaFlamme (sp) was quite a good musician I think. Hope you enjoyed it. Sort of progressive. Very period.

I did indeed. Had not heard it all the way through since the 70’s. Brought back a lot of memories.

Unfortunately I don’t think that band got a fair shake, but was under bad management. Same manager the Airplane had, and who were prying themselves from when It’s A Beautiful Day hired the guy. He actually wouldn’t allow them to perform in S.F. for quite a while.
@noromance

@bkeske Streaming the 9th. Chailly Gewandhaus Orchester Leipzig 2013 and Klemperer New Philharmonia Orchestra London 1967.

I have the Chailly Mahler/Royal Concertgebouw CD box set. Very very nice. It’s what lead me to find the 9th on vinyl, as I’ve not had it yet. Very few 9th’s available on vinyl actually.
Hans-Dieter Bauer & Siegfried Schubert-Weber play Edvard Grieg -  Tänze Über Norwegische Motive Op. 64, Walzer-Capricen Op. 37, & Symphonische Stücke Op. 14. RBM Records 1983 Germany
Bernstein conducts Shostakovich - Piano Concerto No. 1, André Previn piano, & Poulenc -Concerto For Two Pianos, Gold & Fizdale piano. New York Philharmonic. Columbia Masterworks 1962
@spiritofradio

Hey, did you check Vol. 9 of your big yellow Solti boxes   I think there's one in there.

I have 6 & 10 James. 9 is on my want list. And yes, I checked those first 😉
As I was getting ready to spin some albums last night, I checked on my YouTube regular daily watches, and for whatever reason, a recent Richard Thompson interview popped up, and I watched it; fascinating. Then right after, a interview/documentary on Fairport Convention followed, and I was hooked, and my night was over.

So, after watching both, I’m lead to play some Fairport, Richard, or both. First up…

Fairport Convention - S/T (The US release/version of ‘What We Did On Our Holidays‘). A&M 1969. The first album after Sandy Denny joined.

New Hungarian Quartet : Schubert - The Last Four Quartets. VoxBox 3 LP box, 1973
Just arrived….

Leo Kottke - 6- And 12-String Guitar (‘Armadillo’). Takoma reissue, date unknown….probably early-mid-70’s. Originally 1969.
Juilliard String Quartet : Ives - String Quartet No. 1 & 2. Columbia Masterworks 1985
Martinů : Janáček Quartet - String Quartet No. 5 & Vlach Quartet - String Quartet No. 7. Supraphon 1980 Czechoslovakia
Paul Kletzki Conducts Mahler No. 1. The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Angel reissue late 70’s, originally 1962

Sir John Barbirolli conducts Grieg - Peer Gynt. Hallé Orchestra W/The Ambrosian Singers. Angel 1969

Antal Dorati conducts Rimsky-Korsakov - Le Co D'Or Suite & Borodin - Prince Igor Excerpts. London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. Mercury Golden Imports 1973
Just arrived today, another to the Leo collection….

Leo Kottke - Greenhouse. Columbia reissue 1979, originally 1972

Really nice SQ on this. Nice, as Leo’s releases could vary in that regards. Perhaps improved with the reissue.
Finally, snagged an album set that has been on my radar for some time now. Had this many moons ago, but think an ex snagged it (probably by accident) long ago.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s Will The Circle be Unbroken 3 LP set for $9.99. And from the photos, looks to be in really great shape. An auction on eBay, and I’m the only one who bid.

@tomic601

Brian - I sent that to Steve, I believe he enjoys it.

It’s a very nice collection, and collection of great players/singers. Nice change of pace LP. Will take me back to my hippy dippy bluegrass days 😉

Good to hear your fishing expedition went well Jim 👍🏼

Also picked up a Capitol EU release of Richard Thompson’s Rumor and Sigh. Should be here Friday. I’m sure it will kick my cassette version outta the park.

Vernon Handley conducts Delius - Orchestral Works. The London Philharmonic Orchestra. Lambert & Butler Master Series 1979 UK
Sir Simon Rattle conducts Britten - Young Apollo / Canadian Carnival / Four French Songs / Scottish Ballad. City Of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Angel 1982
Wolfgang Sawallisch conducts Schubert - The Complete Symphonies. Staatskapelle Dresden. Philips 5 LP box set. Reissue, unknown European release date. Originally 1967

Not sure how far I will go, but start with No. 1 & 2.

Actually had to turn on my AC for the first time this year to make sure I wasn’t blasting my neighborhood ;-)
@big_greg

Mingus Ah Um

Great album. Have it on CD, but need the vinyl.

Everyone talks about Kinda Blue, but I really think that album competes with it.
Came in the mail earlier. Can’t take it, so taking a break from work to listen…

Richard Thompson - Rumor and Sigh. Columbia/EMI original EU release, 1991.

In simply fantastic shape. At least M-…..but it cost $$$
Back to this box, symphonies 1-3 last night. Picking up at No 4

Wolfgang Sawallisch conducts Schubert - The Complete Symphonies. Staatskapelle Dresden. Philips 5 LP box set. Reissue, unknown European release date. Originally 1967

@puffball08 reminded me I hadn’t spun any George for a while….

George Harrison - Dark Horse. Apple 1974

Treo Mafia! 👍🏼

@big_greg

I found a new MOV 180 gram version pressed in 2010 for a decent amount, so jumped on it. Thanks for the impetus. Been thinking of getting this on vinyl for a while now.

@puffball08

My Dark Horse is a Jacksonville pressing as well. I think it sounds pretty good, but in terms of surface noise, well, I bought mine new when it was released, and played the hell out of it. So, many of my albums from that time have ‘user abuse’ surface noise vs pressing noise. Thus, can’t say I can blame the pressing as much as not handling my vinyl back then with the care I do today. Damn teenagers! 😁

@big_greg

Well, the one positive is the MOV, or any vinyl probably, will beat the pants off my CD version 😁
